We played "Who wants to be a know-it-all?" last year for Teen Read Week.  We
wrote all library- and book-related questions ourselves and our teens did
pretty well with them.  We wrote 75 questions--with three general categories
(easy, intermediate, and hard) and had seven contestants play within an hour
to an hour and a half.

Hope this helps!

To tell you the truth, Wanda, I *love* books that call for bending and
stretching and kicking and active stuff like that!!  Kids really enjoy
getting to be a little wild in storytime, so I always include an active book
or song (we do a lot of Pokeys, e.g. the Leaf Pokey or the Snowman Pokey).
The trick is to make sure the kids are all spread out so no one is close
enough to hurt someone else, and to make the active thing a specific
activity so when it's over, we move on to something else less active.

Hi all,

I have a 10+yr. old video camera that still works and
would like to use it this summer at our branch.  I
would really like to recruit ya's to be the 'film
crew', while school age kids (and perhaps some other
yas) 'perform' and/or 'play' with participation
stories and/or readers theater.

Any favorite stories, scripts, books, skits, props,
etc?
Any other fun things to do with cameras and
kids/youth?  We've done book reviews ala the end of
"Reading Rainbow".  I've also heard of a video
scavenger hunt--but it works with teams, each of which
has its own camera. What have ya'll heard of or done
that was successful.

Any comments on filming vs. not filming?  Any ideas
about 'warm ups' to do prior to our readers
theater/participation stories?  Other comments about
potential anxieties on the part of the 'kids' and on
the part of me and other older staffers/leaders?

Please, help me give that camera one of the best
summers of its aging life!  (And of course, help our
'kids' have a great summer too, tappng into talents
related to performing and tapping into a greater
appreciation for the fun that extends from books and
words.

With great thanks,
Leigh

For a similar game show program last fall, I searched metacrawler for trivia
by
typing in the topic.  For example, " pop music trivia"  got hits several for
trivia quizes.  I also incorporated questions about the library, about YA
services and programs and me!  Include some silly answers for laughs. There
are
LOTS of trivia quizes online.

Hi Kathleen-
We have done the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" at our library with
primary age students.  It was very popular.  We tried to choose questions
that would be appropriate for the grade levels based upon standard national
and state curriculum.  We used books like "What Your Fourth Grader Needs To
Know".  There is a sixth grade version of this book too.  Our state also
has fourth, sixth and ninth grade proficiency tests.  We looked in the
study guides for these books as well.  We also wanted to include children's
literature trivia.  (In fact one time that we played the game was during
Children's Book Week and the theme of the game was children's books) We
used books with children's literature trivia like  "Newbery and Caldecott
Trivia" and "Name that Book."
Good Luck!

Hi There -
I too am doing a "Who wants to be a book-anaire?" game this summer.
I've been doing a Jeopar-dewey game for the last few summers and wanted to
branch off into other game shows.  I was going to keep it low tech at
first then I realized I had a laptop & projector available so why not!
I figured someone must have already created a powerpoint presentation of
WWTBAM? so I search via Google and found .....

www.amphi.com/~pgreenle/classmat.htm

and it takes some time to input the questions - I bought the Junior
version of the WWTBAM? game for the questions mainly!  But I also created
many of my own.  I changed the lifeline from Phone a Friend to Phone a
Librarian & we'll call another library branch in our library system
(librarians will be asked to volunteer ahead of time so we know they'll be
available.

Also if anyone is interested in doing Jeopardy (I rename it Jeopar-dewey,
there is a powerpoint version of that available also ....

Gotta keep it fun!
Martin

Hi,
Do any of you have lists of fiction set in foreign lands? Any titles you
have would really help with my summer reading club.  Thank you.
