You're so wise to be defining this collection in its early stages.
There's so much available in this area.
When we were looking at where we wanted to put our $ resources for a
parent/teacher resource center, we started first with defining what we
thought our adult department was collecting. Because we found that
they
bought widely in areas of pregnancy and childbirth, childe development and
psychology, discipline and other "issues"-type books, we chose to
focus
our parent/teacher collection with books having a hands-on learning theme.
The types of materials found are: learning through play, reading aloud,
storytelling, homeschooling, rainy day activities, travelling with kids,
birthday parties, etc.

What an incredibly creative bunch you all are! Here
is a partial list of the 31 (!!!) suggestions I got
for the use of 2" x 3" Formica countertop sample tiles
with a small hole drilled near the top:
-necklaces
-keychains
-trivets
-break them up and use them in mosaics that way
(neat!)
-"dog tags"
-tiny picture frames
-decopage on pictures and make a stand for the back
-do a tile-stacking contest (possibly to break them up
for mosaic use...!)
There were lots more and I need to revisit the list
before I make a decision...Thanks so, so much for all
the options!
BTW, for all those who asked, I acquired the tiles
from Home Depot via my fiance, who is a kitchen
designer there. They were discontinuing a good number
of countertops and he got me all the samples from
those. I am not sure if other HD's would be able to
donate similar sample to your programs, but it would
certainly be worth the phone call!
Thanks again.

I am looking for a performance/slam poet for my Open Mike Night for the
coming year. This past April I had Cin Salach, a Chicago performance
poet
come in corrolation with Open Mike Night and it worked out well, but I
would like to have someone different this year. Any suggestions, or
people/groups you've had that would be good for teens? I work with the
high school crowd, so it would have to be appealing for ages 14-18 and not
the middle schoolers. Thanks in advance. I'm looking for someone
fairly
local, like in the Chicagoland area.

We have a well-stocked (IMHO) parenting resource collection here in our
Kids' Room. Some of our most popular subjects are anything having to
do
with learning disabilities and ADHD, and dealing with divorce. We,
too,
have a growing homeschooling population, and their materials are shelved
here, too. We also include pop "sociology" books such
as "Real Boys" and
"Cherishing our Daughters." We have a lot of books on
breastfeeding, toilet
training, and other issues of concerns to parents of children Birth-3,
thanks to a locally administered Dept. of Ed. grant.
The collection is right next to the toy area, so when kids are playing, the
parents can browse. They seem to appreciate it!
Cheers,

Hi! I remember some people posting about where to turn for young kids
who
want to get published. I was going through a catalog recently &
came across
this book:
The Young Writer's Guide To Getting Published by Kathy Henderson. The
ISBN
is 1582970572 & costs $18.99 It is listed as for kids ages 10-16.
This is
the description:
Over 100 updated listings help kids get their work published.
Includes the kind of material each market wants, suggestions from editors,
contest rules, pay rates, prizes & more. Also features an early
short story
from Stephen King.
Hope this helps! Have a good week.
