We have a separate computer policy from our unattended
children rules. The rules, which we are fairly strict
about, are that children under the age of 7 cannot use
a computer unattended. We also state that children
regardless of age must have basic computer skills to
use the computers unsupervised. We simply don't have
the staff to "babysit" while the kids play games. If
they need personal attention it must be provided by an
adult that came with them. We do use volunteers when
they are available to help with the computers in
general but we still try to stick with the rules. As
far as the general computer problems you described I
don't think I would mess with the CD-ROMS if you can
get out of it. Our games are on a server. We already
have enough to do messing with rebooting, mice that
don't work, etc. I can't imagine hopping up every 20
minutes to change out software.
However, back on the subject of unattended
policies...I think an important thing to remember is
that these policies are in place to protect children
not so much to govern behavior. Some kids will tear
the place up even if their parents are "watching"
them.

Thank you to all the people who immediately knew that this story was
"What
Was
That?" by Geda Bradley Matthews. It's out of print, but we'll try
ILL for
our
patron. This group is wonderful!

Original message:
I have a patron looking for a book read about 15 years ago, about a family
of bears and a family of bugs. The bugs live in the walls of the
bear's
house,
and their daily lives sort of echo each other. At night something
scares
them,
and each bear (and each bug) jumps into the bed of the next biggest, until
they
finally all pile into the parents' beds and break them.

Ooops. Walter Minkel corrected me on this one--he has actually READ
the
books
my patron wanted featuring a loner sci-fi hero and his flying telepathic
sidekick.
The series was written by Douglas Hill, and includes _Caves of Klydor_,
_ColSec Rebellion_, and _Galactic Warlord_.
Now, if only *I* could find a flying telepathic sidekick--just think how
useful
that would be!

The rest, I've just wasted.

Thanks to all of you in advance for any answers you might have to
this question. A patron of mine read a book about an individual
crying from her bed about "not wanting to go to school, not having
any friends at school, afraid no one would like them, etc." I'm sure
you've heard that routine, especially with a new school year about
to begin. Anyway, when the covers are pulled back on the bed, the
individual in the bed is a teacher and not a student. Sounds like a
funny story, but I haven't read it personally. Any ideas of what the
title might be? If so please email me at karp@tln.lib.mi.us.
Thanks
so much.
