Hi, Stephanie. Congrats on a job that you will absolutely love!
I have
been doing this for 2 years at my current library and every day is a new
experience. Anyway, just like you build up a "repertoire"
(sp?) of
preschool, toddler, etc. stories here is the opportunity to do the same with
grade school. Stories can be longer 2 or 3 of the picture book fairy
tales,
folk tales, etc. Like Swamp Angel, Rough faced girl, Bit by Bit (a
particular fav of mine). Stories to get the kids invlved like noise
making
and responses are particularly good. then I like Stories to Solve with
the
older grades - gets them thinking. Hope this helps! If you ever
need
support or anything, drop me a note.

I once asked staff to track time spent on program planning for children and
young adults -- this included everything from story times to crafts to
special events programs and book discussions, etc. We averaged out at
two hours for every program (programs ranging from a half hour to an
hour --
or more for e.g. a cartooning workshop). Some people needed more time
to
prepare in general and prep time varied with the program to some extent, but
this two hour figure became a very useful handle for me in scheduling the
desk and off-desk time.

OK, I admit it....I should have jotted these things down when they were
first posted. I tried the Archives but cannot access them. We
would like
to do a Winnie the Pooh 75th birthday party in October sometime.
Please send any great ideas my way to barbarascott@hotmail.com
Thanks bunches!!!

Thanks to Karen Brown of Montery PL in California, I have my answer to
the stumper posed some weeks ago about the boy kidnapped from a dock
and sent to an island holding other kidnapped boys and girls. The book
is _Jexium Island_ by Madeline Grattan and I am sure looking forward to
reading it again! Thanks, Karen--hope to see you at CLA in November!

Subject: Stumper - picture book, Swedish Writer?

Hi,
A book or series of books (picture books) - realistic illustrations, a
Swedish or Norweigan writer. Last seen about 10-15 years ago.
Our customer
remembers one about the seasons with lush illustrations of children at the
market ; playing in the snow etc.
We thought it might have been Carl Larsson or Astrid Lindgren.
The customer thought the Astrid Lindgren ones were close but still not quite
the ones she was thinking of (Astrid Lindgren's illustrations are not as
lush). She recalls one book with a fountain in it.
Please can anyone help - repond directly to me at the email address below.
Thanks in anticipation!
Cheers
Zak

Hi everybody!
I'm working on a bathtime theme and I have some great
books and recorded songs but I'm looking for some fun
fingerplays or action rhymes to flesh it out. Do any
of you have some really good ones?
TIA

Hi Everyone,
So far I've had several responses to our stumper about the kitten
who accidently is dyed blue. Several people wondered if the book
was the Margaret Wise Brown book The Color Kittens. Thank you to
Ann-Marie, Lisa and Allison. We don't think this is the book.
Diana is closer, we think, to the answer. She thought it was A
Kitten Called Peppermint by Albert Whitman. She was also kind
enough to do a search on Loganberry Books and they seem to think
the book is just called Peppermint by Dorothy Grider. I can't
confirm either but I thank you just the same.

Dear Yaccer's:
I know this isn't something we normally discuss, but as I was reading this
book yesterday I thought to myself, I need to tell pubyac librarians about
this book!
It is called Tales of a Female Nomad by Rita Golden Gelman. Yes, the
author of More Spaghetti I Say and other children's books.
After her divorce the author decided to live with different cultures, I'm
in the middle of her stories of life in Nicaragua in the mid 80's.
Interesting stuff. If you've ever felt like packing up and
moving on and
seeing what you're made of, this is the book for you. I think the fact
that we know her books makes it just a little bit more interesting too!
Happy reading,
Sharon L
