handling it.  Could you share your responses with the list?  Thanks so

Does anyone know about the puppet shows given by
Patrice Heiken from Evansville Indiana?  A teacher in
my building saw them at the Illinois Reading
Conference a few years ago in Springfield, and she
thought they were great.  However, she was often
easily impressed, so I'm looking for other input -
good or bad.  I'm trying to find a dinosaur-related
program for our summer reading, and she had a program
called "The Great Traveling Dinosaur Show."

Does anyone have a program/presenter to recommend on
dinosaurs and on rocks/geology who might be available
in the central Illinois area?

Thanks,

I would like to take Pam's request a touch further and ask for teaching =
tips for teens who will be training children.  We have done this one year =
already and the trainers were almost unanimous is saying that they need to =
be taught how to teach a group of children (10 -15  of them, in this =
case).  Classroom control, how to help the slow child while keeping the =
quick ones interested, etc. The children range in age from 8-13.
There are ESL and behavorial issues as well.  They are training the kids =
on computers and the Internet, if it makes a difference.

I have just begun a knitting club for the teens in our
library district.  They meet every Friday from 3:30 -
4:30pm.  Many of these teens have never knitted
before, so lessons were the first on the agenda.  The
first project is an easy to do: bookmark.

The program is a big success and it is wonderful to
see the teens do something with their fingers other
than press video game buttons.

And most important...THEY LOVE IT!

Just thought I'd share this one with the group...

back in 1996 during the Atlanta games we built our SRP
theme around the Olympics too. We had a great bulletin
board idea. We made an Olympic Torch using gold
wrapping paper--very cheap. Then whenever an SRP
participant made it to a particular level in the
reading club (reading 30 hours in our case) they could
trace their hand in red, orange or yellow paper and we
would add it too the flame. By the end of the summer
it could have burnt the place down!

Hello,

We are in a unique position of opening a new branch
library. We are trying to locate a vendor or supplier
of art prints and/or decorations that are suitable for
our children's section.

The library carpet, walls, etc. are earthtones. We're
thinking  of maybe using a southwest theme being that
we are located in sunny southern California. So
possibly some Native American-looking animals (lizard,
bear, etc.). Other decorating ideas would be
appreciated as well!

Please reply to me directly and I will summarize for
the list.

Hi all,
Here is a message from a patron looking for a book for her sister:

"Do you remember a book about a little girl whose father traveled alot?
He would bring her back a doll from whatever country he visited.  She got
quite a collection.  Then at the very end of the book (a Golden book, most
likely) he brought her a doll that looked just like her."

I too remember this book and I'm pretty sure it was either a Golden book
or from another similar set of books all published in that handy size.
The only other detail my sister thinks she remembers is that one of the
dolls may have been from France and might have been named Marie.  This
book was in our house sometime in the mid 1950's.

Any help you can give me will appreciated.

The Media Coalition, Inc

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, February 27, 2002
(contact information below)

INTERNET HARMFUL TO MINORS STATUTE HELD UNCONSTITUTIONAL

In a lawsuit brought by a broad array of media and civil liberties
plaintiffs, a United States District Court in Tucson, Arizona held
unconstitutional and permanently enjoined the enforcement of an
Arizona
statute criminalizing the intentional or knowing transmission over the
Internet to a minor of material considered "harmful to minors" as
defined by
Arizona law.  ACLU v. Napolitano, No. CIV 00-0505TUC AM.  The Court,
holding
the statute unconstitutional under both the Commerce Clause of the
U.S.
Constitution and its First Amendment, found the statute overbroad,
unconstitutionally vague and violative of the Commerce Clause because
Arizona has no legitimate interest in protecting persons outside of
Arizona
from speech that Arizona deems to be harmful to minors.

The plaintiffs, who filed the suit in the summer of 2000, included
Media
Coalition members American Booksellers Foundation For Free Expression,
Association of American Publishers, Inc., Freedom to Read Foundation,
Inc.,
Magazine Publishers of America, National Association of Recording
Merchandisers, Periodical and Book Association of America, Publishers
Marketing Association, Recording Industry Association of America, Inc.,
and
Video Software Dealers Association, Also plaintiffs were the ACLU and
a
number of websites.  While the Arizona legislature last year amended
the law
after the lawsuit had commenced in an apparent attempt to avoid the
law
being invalidated, the federal court's February 19, 2002 order held
that the
further amendment was unconstitutional as well.

Michael A. Bamberger of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal in New York, one
of
the counsel for plaintiffs, stated, "We are gratified but not surprised
by
the result.  Similar laws have been uniformly held unconstitutional,
including those in New York, New Mexico, Virginia and Michigan."

For further information, contact Michael A. Bamberger at 212-768-6756
or
David Horowitz 212-587-4025.  If you would like to speak with one of
the
plaintiffs, you may call Christopher Finan, President, American
Booksellers
Foundation for Free Expression, 212-587-4025.

The American Civil Liberties Union recently argued a Supreme Court
challenge
to a federal version of an Internet "harmful to minors" law in Ashcroft
v.
ACLU.  A ruling in that case is expected this summer.  For more
information,

We did a very simple carnival last year at the end of Summer Reading
Program.  We had a ring toss game, a donut-eating contest where the kids
had to eat a donut dangled from a string without using their hands, a
fish pond, a face painting booth, a clown giving away balloon animals, a
bubble blowing booth with big bubble hoops, and a "liquidate the
librarian" booth, where the kids got to throw wet sponges at me!  We had
prizes at some of the booths, which every child received, and we had two
donated books which we gave as door prizes.  Of course, we also had
cotton candy and drinks.  The kids had a ball---alot of time and
trouble, but it was worth it.

Hi!  Just thought I would try the collective brain for this one.  A patron
came in looking for a book that she thinks is called _Has anyone seen my
elephant?_ or _Have you seen my elephant?_.  She doesn't remember the
author.  She says the book is dated 1976 or before.  It may have been
received through a book club.  I have tried searching Worldcat and Library
of Congress to no avail.  Not much to go on here, but I'd appreciate any
ideas you may have.  Thanks, Lori
