Hi all!
Thanks for all of your great ideas and advice recently!

I have two stumpers today.

My first patron is looking for a book that she read as a child (probably
about 20 years ago) about a mouse who won't say cheese until he is given
a
big piece of cheese.  Each time he is asked to say cheese, his smile
gets a
little bit bigger until he gets that huge piece of cheese and gives a
great
big grin.

My second patron remembers a book she read to her children in the 1960s.
It
is about some animals including a hippo and a giraffe.  The phrase
"tooty-fruity" is in the book and she remembers an illustration of the
hippo
eating a big bowl of tooty-fruity icecream.

Thank you!

Thanks to all that have responded. The answer about Johnny
Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet is that it was a Disney short cartoon
(and is included on the video MAKE MINE MUSIC). I have relayed
this information on to the patron (who will be so glad to find that
she is not crazy).

Hi,

I have a patron who remembers reading a book about 20
years ago by Dr. Seuss called Circus McGurkus.  The
spelling is made up--he isn't sure, and who knows what
Dr. Seuss may done with it.  I tried searches lots of
different ways, however, and no luck.  Anybody out
there remember anything like this?

Howdy Pubyakkers,

I have a patron looking for a book about a boy who looks out a window
and sees the seasons change and the years go by from that window. It's a
picture book - written probably in the mid '80's. She doesn't know
author or title, and conventional sources have given me no other clues.
Ring any bells??

Please e-mail me at jrstokes@yahoo.com. Many thanks in advance.

Hello...I have a stumper that a patron put to me (and
several other people & librarians) that seems to dimly
ring a bell but not quite--please see if you can help:
My patron is approx. 21 years of age & remembers this
story from when he was a child. He remembers it as
being a picture book:
2 pigs find treasure buried in their pigpen. They buy
a house with a pool, a car, & clothes. There are
humans in this story but they have no problem
accepting money from pigs. After a while, the 2 pigs
decide they hate living like this so they drive their
car (he remembers the car as being a 1957 blue
chevy)into the pool & go back to living in their
pigpen.

Does this ring any bells?
Thanks for any ideas you can share,
Nancy Opalko

Our technical school offers training for child care workers. One of the
requirements of the training is to read 5 books showing gender diverse
roles. The books must be no more than 5 yrs. old. The Community Helpers
series by Bridgestone and the "We need..." by Pebble Books work.=20

HI
There's a new book out "Go Trucks Go" that shows male and female truck
drive=

A new one out by Bill Martin, Jr. is "Fire, Fire!" Said Mrs. McGuire has
wom=
en in various roles such as fire personnel, police officers, etc.  All
women=
 in the book, and very humorous ending.  That's all I can think
of offhand.

Hi Danielle,=20
I have an brilliant book at home called Man's Work by Annie Kubler.
Since I=
 don't have it with me the details are sketchy but I believe it is a
wordles=

house.=20
Hope this helps,=20

Newborn, by Kathy Henderson, Dial Books for Young Readers, 1999

------------------------------------------ I did notice this, in a way
There=
 are lots of books showing women in=20
non-traditional roles, but it is difficult to find similar books
about=20
men. What we can do is emphasize books that show people "just being"
in=20
a positive light.=20

I do love the book "Old Red Rocking Chair" by Phyllis Root because it=20
shows many people--men & women, old to young--using a variety of
skills.=20
One man can tinker with electronics, but can't handle a hammer and
saw.=20
One woman can build and repair furniture, but doesn't know how to
sew.=20
All the people are resourceful; at its heart it's a story about=20
recycling.=20

"Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm" is another good one, an exciting story=20
with great pictures about a man who grows balloons. Our narrator is a=20
young girl, who happens to be African American, who endeavors to
learn=20
Harvey Potter's secret. In the end she becomes a farmer, too.=20
