Many fast food restaurants are willing to donate free food coupons for
summer reading program prizes.  Some of them will print them up special with
the program title on them.  This is at no expense to the library, fun for
kids and helpful to families, and supports local businesses.

We are considering adding comic books to our library
and bookmobile collections and are trying to figure
out how to process them. We don't think they are worth
doing a complete cataloging record on them. However,
if we don't do any kind of record on them at all and
let kids check them out on the honor system, we're
afraid we'll just be giving them away. How do others
with comic books handle this?

Hi all,
I've been lurking and may have missed someone else making my point.
I've used Folkmanis for years. I cannot say I've ever had a problem with
them. But that's not saying there could be problems at times.
I've read some posts about puppet sources over the past year or two.
I like using puppets but I cannot see paying retail for them. I don't want
to sound like a commercial but Folkmanis is a good source for libraries and
schools to buy puppets at wholesale prices. There is a $200 minimum but if
you are careful, you can get over 20 puppets for a good core collection!
Most of the Folkmanis puppets are realistic and have improved over the
years. If I can't make a puppet myself or find a wholesale source for
puppets, I find another alternative.
Kathy Schalk-Greene of Mt. Laurel Public Library here in NJ does a wonderful
presentation on puppets. Buying them, making them, using them.
Thank you for my two cents worth.

I'm very interested in this "adopt a shelf" program.  I have many children
in my library who are just dying to help, but don't quite understand how
tedious helping can be!

Many thanks to those who responded to my stumper about a girl living
next to an abandoned cottage and discovers a crystal Christmas tree
there.  The answer is The Crystal Tree by Jennie D. Lindquist.  My
patron was thrilled as she wants to have her daughters read it now. =20

I received an e-mail from a women in Texas looking for a chapter
book that was written in the late 60s early 70s about a family that goes
on vacation and while on vacation the parents get into a car accident.
When the parents don't return to the children, the children go on an
"adventure" to get back home.  If you have any ideas please contact me.
Thank you.

We have a comic book collection and they are checked out somewhat similar to
books. None of the comic books are cataloged but we have large plastic
envelopes/folders behind the circulation desk with barcodes on them. When
someone wants to check out comic books we write down the number that they
have
taken and scan the envelope. When they return the comics we check the card
with
the number to make sure they have all been returned. We don't keep track of
title or author, just the number of comics they have taken. It seems to work
well for us.
