Dear Pubyacers,

Help!
Either I got button happy and deleted it or have mislaid my copy of the high
low interest book list for 7 & 8th graders.  Would someone who still has it
send it my way?  THANKS!

I know its a little late but I have been getting lots of requests for books
related to the WTC attack to read aloud to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. I have
been sending them to the 600s for books on Fire trucks and rescue teams, but
does anyone know of any read aloud books that might be appropreiate?

Well the stinky smell part seems
interesting...you REALLY CANNOT have children
inhale any form of paint or turpentine fumes.
Dangerous dangerous dangerous!

Interesting that you should ask.  We just had two special needs adults
and their caregivers go into our preschool program.  We don't usually see
a lot of adults wanting to attend but it happens occasionally.  Right now,
we aren't offering special programs for adults with special needs.

A huge "thank you" to all of you who responded to my stumper about the boy
getting his intelligence from a mouse.  It was rather garbled, and you were
great to figure it out.  It is indeed "Flowers for Algernon" by Daniel
Keyes, made into a movie, "Charly."  The patron agreed that this was what
she was looking for and was quite pleased.

Thanks for taking the time to answer.

dear pubyac's--

i have been asked to find a remembered scary story that was told to a
family of children approximately 12-15 years ago.  it was told to
deliberately terrorize the children and now one of them, who is
receiving professional help, needs to know the real story.  the man went
so far as to place red lights in flashlights to be the eyes of the
creature, and stand outside the children's windows to further
pyschologically damage them.  we are hoping someone out there will
recognize the story from the bits listed below.

what is known about the story:  main character is a man who changes into
a wolf; has glowing red eyes; ability to leap from the ground to the
roof of a house;  she thinks the origin of the tale may be southern.

any help with this would be deeply appreciated.  thanks in advance. //jt

Elsie Dinsmore, the first at least, is a 19th century novel that teaches
girls how to be subservient. As to quality, like other books its age, it can
be tough going because of the complexity of the sentence structure. I first
read it in a course on historical children's literature and frankly I think
most of the kids who are likely to read it would not have an easy time
plowing through it.

Becky Ann,

We have a terrific resource that is a few years old, but a standard:
Beyond Picture Books:  A Guide to First Readers, by Barbara Barstow.
Publisher is Bowker,
1995.  I don't know if there is a new edition coming out but this is the
2nd edition.
I also have a core list of authors that we developed in-house, if you
would like to see it.

Hope this helps!

At Spokane County Libraries, we don't have programs for special needs
adults, but we have had adults with limited english sit in on storytime to
help them learn the language.  This was no problem at all, in fact it was
fun.  I see no problem with the 28 year old developmentally challenged woman
and her mother attending storytime.  Having her there could be a good
experience for the children also.

We are beinging to build a new library.  I have been
looking at furniture for a children's library.

I saw a diplay at ALA 2002 of Cozy Books.  It is nice
furniture for a children's library.

I would like to hear from someone who has purchased
this furniture.  Any problems? How about keeping the
furniture clean?  Did parents and children like the
furniture?  How long have you had the furniture?  Any
problems with it fading?

We are thinking of purchasing the furniture and would
like to hear from librarians who have actually used
the furniture in their library.

Thanks,
Paula

An appeal to the group's collective wisdom,

A patron remembers a story published around 1961 about a witch who was
always late for the witching hour so she set her clock ahead an hour and
so did several other witches.  So on Halloween she sets out while kids
are trick-or-treating.  She joins them has a great time and the kids
love her shiny blue nose.  She didn't think it was any of the Dorrie
witch stories.  We don't own Dorrie and the Blue Witch but showed her
others and she said the illustrations weren't alike at all.

Patron is looking for a picture book, "probably about
1st or second grade level", not a chapter book:

An elderly woman is telling a child stories about when
she was younger and a school teacher.  At the end she
says something like "and now I'm teaching you".

The title may have a name in it - a long old-fashioned
name like Caroline.
The book is picture-book size and long rather than
tall, i.e. longer horizontally than vertically.

That's all she remembers, hope it'ss enough to jog
someone's memory. Thanks.

A patron wants a poem her mother read to her, written in a mid-western
accent, a la J W Riley. (We have gone through his collected works and
cannot find it.

She remembers no words in the title.

The story is about a farm couple who start off for town, the cart or
buggy breaks down. "They sat by the road and they said not a word"  is
the only quote or paraphrase she can remember. The couple ends up
driving back home again without ever reaching town.

I know this is sketchy, but I have faith in the collective wisdom of the
group.

that had impressed you(I posted a compilation to the

can go to the library's main page at

I'd be interested in any input you may have, but be

Wendy,
As a former teacher for older kids with special needs, I often found
that young kids have no problems in dealing with others that have
disabilities.  I think it would be a wonderful opportunity for both the
woman and the children in program.  What a great way to show diversity!
The only thing I would recommend is that you alert parents that the
woman may be there.  This would give parents an opportunity to discuss
appropriate behavior with their kids before hand.
Good luck!

I had a mother of a 28 year old woman - with the mental ability of a 5=20
year old - ask if she could attend our storytime for ages 3 - 6 years.

Do other libraries allow special needs adults attend their children=20
programs?
Do other libraries provide special programming for special needs adults?

Our story time attendance is typically 30 - 40 children.  We have had=20
special need children attend our children's programming.

Any thoughts or ideas?
