Initially, we were very excited about doing a televised storytime program
when approached by our local cable company.  I wrote several publishers
concerning their policy for using copyrighted material and from the
responses, I gather that each book must have pre-approval from that
publisher to be aired.
We checked with the law librarian in our system and his research led him to
believe that this would be in violation of copyright law unless we used
public domain material (about 70 years old!)    Umm, think kids would be
interested in that?

PUBYAC INQUIRY FROM JULY
Our library has been approached by our local cable company about airing some
of our storytime programs on the local origin cable channel. Has anyone
else done this? Do you need permission from the copyright holders to read
stories aloud for broadcast? If so, is there usually a fee for this
permission? I realize there will be variation among publishers, but wanted
to know what is the norm?

I am thinking of doing a Hawaiian/Tropical theme for my winter reading
program which begins the third week in January.

Anyone done this theme before?  Suggestions, Ideas, Resources?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Ours are called "Kids Kits"

Now what we need help with is a name for our kits.  We already have a
set of circulating kits that are in large maroon bags that include a big
book, several picture books, a teacher resource book, a video, a
cassette tape, and a puppet.  These are called "StoryTime Kits" and are
circulated to our childcare centers.  <snip>
Any clever ideas out there?  Thanks in advance.

Help!  I've been invited to speak at a MOPS (mothers of preschoolers)

Hi,

Our library system is currently trying to decide how to best handle its =
registration for storytimes.  We have found that several of our branches' =
story hours fill up very quickly (usually on the first day of registration)=
and as a result of this, people get sent to different  locations or miss =
out on a great experience.  We max out our registration and we still have =
to turn people away. =20

I would like to know if anyone out there has the same problems that we =
have and what their solutions have been.  Has anyone done a survey of what =
their patrons would prefer for storytime registration?  If yes, could you =
please send me a copy?

I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks you guys, you are amazing!

Many thanks to all who replied to my stumper.  The consensus seems to be
that the book is STONEWORDS by Pam Conrad.  I will run this by my patron
and see what she thinks.  Thanks again and the original stumper follows:

A seventh grader came in today looking for a book she read in 5th grade.
She remember bits and pieces of the plot.  A girl accidentally sets her
house on fire on her birthday and dies in the fire.  Later, the ghost of
the girl who died in the fire haunts another girl who is living with her
grandparents.  I know I have read this one, but can't come up with a
title or author!

Hello Susan,

I have spoken to various MOPS groups in this area on numerous occasions.
I always have a great time and I think the moms do too.  I come prepared
with lots of information about why it is so important to read to young
children (even beginning in utero) and provide lists of books suitable
for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, etc.  I also usually bring some of
my favorite recently published books for these various ages (but might
also briefly refer to the well known books for these ages.)  It isd
usually quite informal and I encourage them to ask questions or make
comments during my presentation.  I also bring brochures about services
provided by each of the libraries in which I work and schedules fo the
regular storytimes at each library.  Possibly the best advice I can pass
along is to be ralaxed and have a good time!

Let me know if you have more specific questions or if I can send you
additional information.
