Thanks very much to everyone who responded to my two recent stumpers.
One was regarding a  book from the 1950s or '60s about people who
resemble their dogs; everyone agreed that it was Easy to See Why by Fred
Gwynne, originally published in 1958 as Best in Show.

The other was a Halloween poem about a boy with no skin; the unanimous
decision was that it is "The Ghost of John," featured in many
anthologies, including In a Dark, Dark Room by Alvin Schwartz, Diane
Goode's Book of Scary Stories & Songs, and Scared Silly by Marc Brown.
Scared Silly attributes the poem to Alvin Schwartz, but the Diane Goode
book gives no author for it.

I am including the original stumper for the ghost poem below. I am
hoping that the girl who requested it will be able to find the single
volume version of it that she says was at her school library, since no
one who replied to my question was familiar with that version. My
patrons will be very happy that so many people took the time to respond
to their requests.

Many thanks,

Marnie

Original Posting:

A patron is looking for a book she read a few years ago at her school
library (she is thirteen now). It is a Halloween poem that begins with a

line like "Once was John with no skin on" or "There was John with no
skin on." It's about a boy who has no skin, only a skeleton. She says it

is a single volume, not a poem in an anthology, and the cover has a
graveyard, haunted house, and skeletons on it. Based on her age, I'm
guessing that it was written before 2000.

I have a patron trying to locate a childhood favorite from the 1960's.
The plot of the story centers around a young Native American boy and
his horse who are out riding away from camp. The boy notices a fire
that is spreading and rides back to warn his people and help them cross
the river to safety. The patron believes that the tribe is from the
Northeastern
U.S. because she remembers longhouses in the illustrations, which she
likens to Paul Goble's work. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Responses can be made directly to me.
Thank you!

We would like to offer a mini-film festival at our library this
winter.  I'm looking for a source for videos which would offer public
performance rights for one time showing at the library.  We are aiming
the program at young adults.  So far all sources for films are too
expensive.  Help!

Hello!

We have a stumper for you.  A customer is looking for a chapter book she
read in elementary school, perhaps 30 years ago.  It is about a contemporary
boy who meets the Revolutionary War era ghost of a boy named Miles.  The
only clear memory she has is of the ghost sitting in a tree looking down at
the boy.

So far we have checked _What Do Children Read Next?_ (print and electronic),
_Fantasy Literature for Children and Young Adults_, our catalog, Amazon.com
and Google but have had no luck.  If you have any suggestions, please send
them to me at mkjones48@hotmail.com and I'll post the answer.

Thanks!

I am needing the collective wisdom of the group!  I have a teacher who
would like a list of picture books to be read aloud to grades K-5.  She
wants the message of the books to be about "prioritizing and following
one's passion/mission".  I suggested Miss Rumphius, Matthew's Dream, The
Painter who Loved Chickens, and Brave Irene.  I even thought of using
"Donkey Trouble" as an example of what happens when we don't "listen to
our own knowledge" ... none of these captures what she wants.  I looked
through A-Zoo, but really didn't see anything that addresses the "need
to prioritize" - which is what the teacher thinks is missing from the
titles I suggested.   If anyone has ANY suggestions, please email me off
list and I'll be happy to post.  Many thanks!
