Thank you everyone for your thoughtful responses.  From the limited amount
of older children's programs I have given before, I had known about the
drawing power of food. I had been offering soda and the Halloween sized
candy--but not even advertising that. So that will be a major thing that I
will consider.
When I started this position, the book club had been started and for the
ages I had stated. We had it advertised on our webpage, and flyers in the
children's area, and the teens area.
From the responses I have received, I believe that  I will start with the
younger kids, go to the schools, and definitely serve food! And then see
from there what to do next.
Thanks again for all the responses. It is really exciting to read the email
from others, but also to get involved with this listserv.

From: Lolly LightHi,

We are just wondering if any of you have a policy at your library on
pulling
items for patrons, for example, a teacher calls and wants us to pull
books
on butterflies, or bats, etc. Do you have a set amount of books or
items you
allow to pull for this person? A set amount per subject? Is it a written
policy or just a procedure you follow?

Any help or advice you can give will be greatly appreciated.

When we had fewer books than we have now, we had a "2 books per
subject" limit.  It wasn't always enforced, though; it was a judgement
call.  Now it's vaguer; we don't want to exhaust a section.  So they
can have thirty or forty books of fairy tales, if they want, or a whole
bunch of dinosaur books, but not twenty books on snakes.

And time of year makes a difference.  When everyone's doing a certain
topic, we are more frugal with filling book requests.  Ask for all our
Martin Luther King books in January or February, and you'll be treated
rather coldly!

A patron is looking for a picture book about a pumpkin that is left out
after Halloween to decay and becomes a home for many small animals.  This is
a book that she read a few years ago.

If this rings a bell for anyone - let me know!
