Hi,
We have been given $1300 of Friend's money to start a children's DVD
collection at our public library. Has anyone come up with a core DVD list?
Any advice on ratio of features to instructional? I'm new to this list,
forgive me if this was a recent topic.
Thanks,

We are going to be partnering with community
organizations that provide services for children. We
want to act as a clearinghouse for anything concerned
with children and services for children and parents.
Has anyone else done this? We are thinking of posting
links from someplace on our web page or at least
posting a list of contacts.
I'd appreaciate hearing (off-list) about ways this has
been handled at other libraries.

Hello friends!
Recently, we have received several phone calls and emails asking whether we
intend to cease publication of Copycat Magazine for K-3 teachers. We're not
sure how this rumor got started, but we would like to assure all of our
subscribers that we have no plans to stop publication. In fact, we're
currently formulating plans for 2004!!
Please help us spread the word and squash the rumor by posting this notice
on your list serves!
Thank you....and happy holidays!

This is one of the replies from the cushions/stools compiled
email......
"Our Toddlers sit on mats-squares of carpeting we had left over
from
reflooring the Special Services Dept. I believe that these could
be
obtained from the carpet store fairly cheaply. "
I have carpet squares that I used to use. It seemed to work
fairly well, but I have also found that I don't need to use them
anymore. But, if you are interested in using them, some carpet
stores will give them to you free if you tell them you are from
the library and/or school.

Hi All,
I have been looking into what graphic novels exist for
children fifth grade and younger. I haven't found too
much outside of Pokemon, Peanuts, and Tintin. Do any
of you have a graphic novel collection for elementary
age and if so what are some of the staples of your
collection?
Thanks in advance,

Thanks to those of you who took the time to respond to my query regarding
durable wall coverings for displays. The two suggestions from various
sources were carpeting and velcro. The velcro wall covering sounds
interesting. I'm wondering if anyone who actually saw this done or has it
could be more specific in terms of the library that has it or the
manufacturer or installer of these large sheets that would cover a wall
area. I need to find out specifics of where you get this stuff and if at
all possible I'd love to take a trip to see this. Thanks again. Jodi

I received this after posting the other responses to my question about
the use of cushions, stools, or chairs during Toddler Times. I have to
agree that emotional distance is an important factor in decisions like
this; I prefer sitting on the floor for this very reason.

Hello, Great Brain!
I was wondering if anyone puts picture books in categories.
We are embarking on a new day care service and often get asked by the
general public where the books are for age three and so on.
We were tossing around the idea of putting our picture books into
categories: books for 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, and older kids. The
thought
was that people can find what they want more easily and also we can
find what we need to take to the day cares.
Any thoughts? Is this way division of books going to be way more of a
pain than a hindrance??
Any + or - appreciated!

I've got some extra money to order multicultural picture books, and would
love to get suggestions for great read-alouds featuring people of
different ethnicities. These are going to be read to children between the
ages of 3 and 5 in low-income preschools, most of which are Head Starts.
I'm looking for short, brightly illustrated titles along the lines of "More
more more" said the baby by Vera Williams, or Eat up, Gemma by Sarah Hayes.
I'd be happy to compile the list and post it. TIA.

We have gotten a question about a book that is being sought for a gift.
Since the subject is baseball and none of us are avid readers on this topic
- we have struck out (groan.) Here are the few details passed along to me
by a colleague:
The book was read in the early to mid sixties. It was a baseball story.
There was a character named Skinny Longnecker. Also there was a character
with pockets or named pockets - not sure which. The patron said the book
reminded him of Homer Price - but that is not the book.
Thanks for any help you can give us.

The following long bibliography is one we've cut and pasted from a variety
of postings that came across PUBYAC in the last 6 months or so. We added
some annotations. You may or may not agree on whether some titles are
really "like" HP, but you could delete what you don't like. Like
I say,
this is just compiled from various posts that have come through, although
we added some annotations.
