Hi Jennifer & Pubyacers~
I have been a student of the Bible since I was a young child, and I do =
not remember any Bible story about cutting off one's nose to spite one's =
face. The OT has warnings about "an eye for an eye or a tooth for a =
tooth", and in the NT, Jesus warns us that if a body part will keep us =
out of heaven, then to cut it off. According to "Phrase Finder" =
(http://phrases.shu.ac.uk , the phrase "Cut off your nose to spite your =
face" is proverbial, (but not the Proverbs in the Bible) and means to =
disadvantage oneself in order to do harm to an adversary. I also checked =
an online Bible concordance for the phrase (no results) and the word =
"nose," for which there were a few hits, but none of them was the phrase =
in question.=20
As for books which illustrate the proverb, maybe "The Butter Battle =
Book" by Seuss will be close to what the patron wants, with each side =
escalating a war in which no one really wins, or other books with a =
similar theme. I hope this helps some.

I have a patron wondering if there is a Children's picture book of the
bible story about someone cutting off his nose to spite his face. Has
anyone heard of such an animal?

Thanks!

I have a patron requesting a novel she read over 25 years ago about a girl
turning 11 who realizes that this number is the same turned upside-down and
that this will not happen again until she turns 88.  Patrons recalls it was
written in diary format.  If this rings a bell, please reply to
jpinsker@bpl.burnaby.bc.ca.  Thanks.
