Hi Janet,

I am a professional storyteller in Massachusetts and I have a few
suggestions
that might help you on your way.

First, I will direct you to another storytellers website which holds a
wealth
of information. Here are two pages full of suggestions for storytelling with
children.

I also teach/coach a Storytelling Club to students at various elementary
schools and I have found these two books to be very useful:

MarthaHamilton and Mitch Weiss' two wonderful collections of stories for
students to tell: Stories in My Pocket: Tales Kids Can Tell (Fulcrum
Publishers, 1996) and How & Why Stories: World Tales Kids Can Tell (August
House, 2000.)

In addition, this website has some good information on teaching storytelling
to children. <A

Any CD or video by Bill Harley would be well worth your money.

Here are two bookstores which deal specifically with storytelling materials:

I have also developed a CD, Researching Stories on the Internet: A
Webliography of Storytelling Resources, which you may view at this site. The
CD runs on a PC but the autostart will not run on a MAC for some unknown
reason. I will be happy to send one to you with my compliments if you think
you might want to add it to your resources. <A

I see from your address that you live in IL. The National Storytelling
Conference will be taking place in Chicago, IL this July. It is a wonderful
and informative five day conference, full of workshops and performances. If
you would like more information you can visit <A

Conference 2003 http://www.storynet.org/Conf/2003/index.htm

In addition, there is a smaller, but no less wonderful conference, which is
held every year in April in Madison, WI. I am not sure how far that is from
you but you can read the information here: Northlands Storytelling Network

Both conference offer many workshops for the beginners and experienced
tellers, as well as professionals in the educational community. I hope this
gives you a good start.

Warm wishes,
Karen Chace
