Hi Kim,

This website is excellent at helping librarians weed certain areas
of one's collection:
www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/

I have had trouble weeding the folk and fairy tale section myself
(my favorite section!) and I know that they keep all sections that they
have discussed in the past on file--so don't think that you are
limited to just what the weed of the month is.  Good luck with everything
and happy weeding!

We were not able to get the Magic School Bus, but the last two years we
have had very successful Magic School Bus nights. We pick one of the books
and come up with crafts and hands-on experiments related to the book. We
set the room up in stations to keep the traffic flowing smoothly. If you
would like more info., let me know.

I'm fairly new to the library world (a year) and I'm curious.  Why
wouldn't Dumb and Dumber (or, any comparable idiotic
film be in the collection?  Just asking.

Then there's the mom who is looking through the video and DVD
collection for a copy of Dumb and Dumber (or, any comparable idiotic
film that, IMHO, shouldn't even be in a library, but that's another
topic).  Her kid comes running up, all excited, with a book.

JUNIOR: "Mommy, Mommy, look at what I found.  Can I take this book
home?"

MOM: "What!? We ain't in here for no books; We're here to get movies.
Who wants to read some stupid book?"

Don't laugh folks.  My desk is right on the other side of an area
divider (a thin, fake, moveable wall) from video.  This conversation
gets repeated almost every day within my hearing.

By the way, want to hear a funny story?  Last week, after throwing out
my sixth misbehaving kid in a single day, I returned to the YA area
with a co-worker.  I told my co-worker, in a voice loud enough to
carry, "That makes 6 today and it's still early.  I'm going to win
that money today."

[Now, my co-workers know me well enough to play along with me]

So, one teen girl looks at me and says, "What money?"
So I say, "The staff has a pot.  Everyone chips in one dollar and if I
can break my record of putting 12 kids out in one day, I get the
money.  It's about $70."

So she says, "You ain't getting no money for throwing me out of here."

She takes her school books out of her bag and starts doing homework--
quietly.  The sentiment is repeated all across the teen room as they
all grab books or magazines and start to do homework.

I had a quiet and peaceful afternoon and evening, and, since, their
behavior has been a bit better. heeheeheehahateeheehee.

Fellow International Pubyacers,
I've been following the political opinions for a few days now. This is
really a rather interesting cultural ideal.  Being a Canadian, we tend to
mock any political party (or politician for that matter). It's our form of
national amusement. We would be amiss not to poke fun at the government. I
do suppose that's what some countries call "freedom of speech." Obviously
some locations take these kinds of comments more seriously than we do.

But related to all this.  Do these values, beliefs, (opinions?) similarly
effect how different countries or regions view censorship? Are some amused
by certain books, while others don't want them on their shelves? Are our
beliefs threatened if someone doesn't believe the same way we do?  Now tell
me: am I being derisive or sincere? Does anyone really care?

There's a website called SUNLINK Weed of the Month Club. The site is at
www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/ . September 1998 is when they covered folktales.
They suggest titles to consider weeding as well as suggestions of possible
additions.

Hope this helps!

Steven,
The bags are great!  We've color coded them with the collection, i.e.,
music=dk. green, folk & fairy tales=red.  Now the books-with-cassettes are
always in the proper place and easier for both patrons and staff to find.
We crimped the hooks on the rod (& one side of the hook is slightly larger
than the other--we crimp the longer side).  It works fine and we barely
notice the unused hooks.  We found that It's a good idea to evenly space
them around the circular rod to suit our own collection.  That way we have
balance of weight on the rod.  Of course, there's a limit to how much you
can control that balance depending on how many are in or out at any given
time.   Good luck!  Barb.

We just got a bunch of those nice Janeway bags to use for our cassette/book
sets.  These are the colored ones with a transparent front and a zipper (you
can also get them through Demco).  Our question is about the hooks.  They
come with metal "S" hooks that you use to hang them on a metal rod.  And
we're not sure if we should attach hooks to the rod, then circulate the
bags, or attach the hooks to the bags and let them check out along with the
bags.  We're concerned about safety...will those hooks on the bags cause
injury to kids at home.  But we think shelving and arrangement will be
easier without a bunch of hooks without bags hanging on the rods.  If anyone
is using these, which option did you choose and how is it working?  Thanks
in advance...

I joined this listserv because the ideas on programming were so helpful to
me in my job as a children's librarian. I also enjoy the funny comments made
sometimes. An example is the comparison to Golum recently.  I don't think it
matters what your political persuasion happens to be, some things are just
funny.  But could we please stop the political commentary and get back to
what we do best?

My 1 1/2 cents worth.

In support of the pertinence of discussing politics, politicians, and how
they affect library service, I am forwarding this email, which came as I was
writing what I sent a minute ago.

Subject: LEGISLATIVE ALERT-IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED

To the Library Community:

LEGISLATIVE ALERT

All library funding is at risk!  We need to work to protect the
Massachusetts Regional Library System and the existing structure of the
Mass. Board of Library Commissioners.   Governor Mitt Romney has requested
that the Massachusetts House and Senate give him expanded authority to cut
local aid in the FY03 state budget. As has been reported widely, these cuts
will directly affect important services throughout cities and towns in the
Commonwealth.  At this writing it is not clear if State Aid to Public
Library (7000-9501) and State Aid to Regional Libraries (7000-9401) will be
impacted.

Governor Romney has indicated that he will try to preserve state aid for
education funding. It is very important at this time that the library
community contact Governor Romney to let him know that libraries are the
"other half" of the education funding.  Let the message be clear "NO MORE
CUTS FOR LIBRARIES."  State Aid to Regional Public Libraries has already
been cut by 24% and State Aid to Public Libraries has been cut by 21%.

We need your help!  Please contact Governor Romney and Lt. Governor Healey
immediately.

Thank you.

Which comment would that be? The comparison between a current political
figure and that of a main figure in a piece of literature that is enjoying
explosive publicity? Drawing parallels between fiction and life and
expressing them is one of the great benefits that reading provides us and
something I would encourage. Perhaps you have not read the original post,
which did not come from me, and are jumping into the fray uninformed? As for
politics and politicians, the fact is, who is elected does affect the
service we can provide our patrons. There are those who favor funding
libraries, and those who look at libraries as an extraneous and frivolous
expense, the first institutions that can weather budget cuts with no real
consequence (here in Massachusetts we are facing these problems as I write
this.) Jokes nonwithstanding, there is room in this forum for expressing
political opinions and having it be relevent to providing services to our
community and encouraging a love a reading - whether it be by comparing
public figures to characters found in popular literature, or by asking
members to support legislation and candidates that make funding libraries a
priority. As always, those who are annoyed by such posts or uninterested in
the topic may delete them before reading, or may reply and spur discussion.
Personally, I am happy that this listserve is more than a stumper-support
hotline as recent discussions (even of a popular toy adopting our
profession,) add the spice and dynamics that make reading posts and
contributing worthwhile. Sincerely, Melissa

I think what's sillier than anything is how we've taken a single, =
half-sentence, tongue-in-cheek aside that most of us read and then moved =
on from, and turned it into a week-long discussion of politics.  I don't =
think political discussion really belongs in this forum, but the =
original poster's comment was far from qualifying as actual political =
discussion.  She made an aside.  If I comment now on how glad I am it's =
Friday, will we get into a big hullaballoo over someone else's opinion =
that Tuesday is a much nicer day, really...  ?  Of course not -- the =
comment about Friday is not the substantive part of the discussion, it's =
just an aside.  Let's all be the civilized adults that we are, set this =
topic where it belongs -- ASIDE -- and move on.  Y'all can feel free, as =
far as I'm concerned, to make whatever jokes you like, and I promise to =
laugh if they're funny, ignore them if they're not, and forget about =
them 5 minutes later.

Just my opinion, of course.  My employer is blissfully uninvolved.

I had a boy--maybe 7th ot 8th grade, in the library the other day.

He needed to find books for an essay on "the social issue" of his
choice.

So, I showed him all my Greenhaven Press books--the opposing
viewpoints, current issues, etc.

He pulled out "Police Brutality: Opposing Viewpoints" and "Sexual
Violence: Opposing Viewpoints."

He looks at them, puzzled, for a minute.  Then, he holds them up and
says to me, "Opposing Viewpoints?  I don't get it!  How can anyone
be "FOR" it?"
