We don't have a circulating collection but we do have a puppet stage (the
plastic Little Tykes version) and a milk crate of puppets which are almost
constantly in use.  It is wonderful to see the creative play (and might I
say language development?) as kids use them.  Our puppets were from Oriental
Trading Company -- I think they cost $20 for 12! (We bought 2 different
assortments and still have 18-20 left after more than two years.)  They are
perfectly-sized for child hands and have stood up well through several
washings (in lingerie bags & hung dry).

Our shelves are wooden and we use large metal book ends with cork bottoms.
We found that the rubber bottoms tend to peal off easily, and the plain
metal book ends slide too much.

My favorite "duh" story was when the city had a huge power outage for 48
hours. We of course were running on generator power, but that meant we were
mostly in the dark, with a few sparse lights. We had one patron come in,
walk around for a while in the dark, try to use a computer and then with no
astonishment, look at me and say, "Do you not have any power here, either?"
I found it VERY funny....

I thought I had the most difficult reference question ever when a
patron
wanted a photograph of Aesop. After the explaining went on and she
left,
deeply disappointed in the inadequacies of the library and my
reference
skills, I found a painting by Velasquez that would have made her
happy,
because it looked like a photograph. Sigh!

When I recited this woeful tale to a colleague, she topped me. She
works in
a a busy business department and she had gotten her firt phone call
of the
day. The question was, "Do you have a phone there?"

Well, I too was surprised by My Friend Rabbit
(which I still haven't seen), but I absolutely
*adore* The Three Pigs by David Wiesner and so do
the kids who come to our library--it's one of the
most frequently circulating books in our
collection. I love all books that inspire kids to
use their imaginations and think "outside the
box," and that is something that the creations of
Wiesner, Scieszka, Van Allsburg and others do. I
wish that more books like these were published
and received wide publicity. What some might
consider a re-hash doesn't bother me--after all,
some of the greatest artists of all time imitated
each other a bit from time to time.
