In our system, users can create a PIN. So in addition to knowing the bar
code of a patron, you need to know their PIN.

Re your comment about the general ignorance of the
public as to just what we do (besides recommending
books). Our local library has been closed for the past
2 months since their boiler broke & there is no heat,
but the staff has been working in the newer section of
the building where the offices and community room are.
---My friend questioned what work they could possibly
be doing. I tried to explain about reading journals,
ordering, planning new programs, hiring performers,
typing up newsletter info. I could go on & on. I'm not
sure that she realized how involved our jobs are.

Our patron records on the internet can be accessed with a library card =
number and a password.  In our GEAC system, a password is always =
required to access patron information.  I don't know if your system =
allows for this, and it doesn't really answer the question of what to do =
when the patron comes in to the desk with card in hand, but it does make =
a difference in terms of confidentiality via the internet.

I hadn't been paying too much attention to the posts about job interview
questions but read the compilation just today and couldn't resist
expressing one of my pet peeves--bulletin boards!  In every Children's or
Youth Services Librarian position that I've had in my 20+ years doing this
work, I have always been in charge of the bulletin board(s) and yet never
have I been asked in any job interview if I have any interest and/or talent
in this particular aspect of the job.  As you can probably tell, I don't!
My favorite bulletin boards have always been the ones where I got art from
local schools.  But I've come to believe that if this is a major (and time
consuming) aspect of the Children's Librarian job, it should be mentioned
in the interview.  Why should it be assumed that someone good with kids and
a good storyteller would automatically be good at bulletin boards?

Thanks for listening!!!:)--Susan
