vegetables grow really large, etc. --- they capture fireflies and use jars
of them for headlights, etc.

Hello collective brain,
I hope someone can help with this stumper. The patron remembers this book
from when she was young (she looks to be in her late 30's). The plot goes
like this:
An old woman is canning food for the winter. Animals begin to show up at
her house, because they are hungry. One of the hungry animals is an
elephant who comes in the house and falls through the floor. The woman
feeds the elephant throughout the winter, and he gets so fat he gets stuck
in the floor. So, the elephant walks and moves the whole house to a more
tropical climate.
Ring any bells? Thanks so much for your help!

>From Berkeley, Calif. to Biddeford, Maine, I received 20 responses to my
double queries involving the following two plot-lines:
1) A young girl lives in an apartment building with an elevator. One day she
takes the elevator to the top floor and finds herself back in time inside of
a Victorian home.
*The correct answer to that one was "Time at the Top", by
Edward
Ormondroyd, first published in 1963. This title has a sequel, "All in
Good
Time". Those who have read this, really really loved it.
"Time at the Top" will be re-released this month by
Purple House Press.
I'll be reading it after our patron returns it.
2) A young girl discovers that her mother was a water nymph. The girl can
see her mother's face when she looks in the mirror.
*The answer was "Little Witch" by Anna Elizabeth
Bennett, 1953.
Our library owned both books and our patron was absolutely beside herself
with the excitement of being able to share favorite stories from her past
with her own daughter. Thank you all so much for helping to make that
happen!
On a side note, one person's guess for the first stumper was "Tom's
Midnight
Garden" by Philippa Pearce. We happened to own that title too, so I checked
it out and read it. Omigosh, it is a GREAT
space and time-type book...beautifully written with an ending that could
bring on tears. Highly recommended.
