A very big thank you to the MANY people who responded to my stumper about
the boy who lived in the automated house.  The overwhelming response was
that the book in question was "Lazy Tommy Pumpkinhead," by William Pene Du
Bois.  We don't own the book, but I've contacted the patron with the title
and we'll try to ILL it.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  My original
posting is below.

<Secondly, this request came in at one of our branches, and none of us here,
both young and old, have been able to identify the book.  This is the quote
from the patron:

"I'm looking for the title and author of a book that my parents used to
borrow from the New York Public Library when I was a child growing up in
Manhattan in the 1960s.  It was a children's book, the illustration style I
remember being similar to Maurice Sendak's.  Some people suggested it may be
by one of the Pene DuBois family?  The story was about a young boy who lived
(by himself?) in an automated house that did everything for him.  Dressed
him, fed him, etc.  One night the house is struck by lightning and goes
amok.  He is forced to learn how to do things for himself.  Great story,
good values.  But I can't find it anywhere." >
