Roberta,
I just went into the Huston Chronicle website http://www.chron.com and on
the left side I clicked on DEATHS, it takes you to a page that has a search
option by listing the last name, it says that they keep obits for 30 days.
Put in Nixon and you should get it.
She was an extraordinary person!

Does anyone have a website where I can find an obituary for Joan Lowery
Nixon?  According to PUBYAC, she died a couple days ago at age 76.  I have
done a Google search, but found nothing.  I can't get to the Houston
Chronicle article without a subscription.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I have a patron looking for a book she read and loved as a child.  She =
says it is titled "The Silver Nut" but she cannot remember the author.  =
She thinks it was published before 1955 and that it is probably British, =
as her grandmother used to send her books from shops in England when she =
was small.  I have checked in Fiction, Folklore, Fantasy & Poetry for =
Children 1876-1985; The Bookfinder; and Twentieth Century Children's =
Writers.  I found a title "The Silver Nutmeg" but the patron says this =
is not it.  I am out of ideas using the resources I have available =
(which are not many).

The patron says the gist of the story is that a little girl is orphaned =
and is sent to live with an aunt.  She receives a necklace with a locket =
in the shape of a silver nut.  When she arrives at the aunt's house, she =
is sad and goes out to the garden to sit under a tree.  She opens the =
locket and finds a tiny key inside.  Looking at the tree, she finds a =
small door and tries the key.  The door opens and she is let into a sort =
of "fairyland". =20

If anyone has any leads or ideas, please respond to me privately at =
katrinan@moval.org

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

I'm reviewing almost all aspects of services, programmes and processes
undertaken by our children's and YA department.  I'm looking for ideas from
libraries a bit bigger than us.
If you are in a system serving a population between 45 000 and 90 000, and
especially if this is mostly one city, and you have any systems, processes,
programmes or activities you are proud of, or which have been thoroughly
reviewed fairly recently, I'd love to hear from you.
The topics we are going to cover are:
1. Programmes - preschool, & school age, including those involving schools
and classes, and those not
2. YA services & promotions
3. Reference and readers' advisory services
4. Promotion and publications
5.Services to special groups
6. Services to branch libraries
7. Physical layout and features of the Children's Library.  (We are
extending shortly, and so have a chance to completely rearrange)
8. Tasks and processes
9. Policies and procedures
10. Training packages
11. Potential new services and products

We are NOT doing collections, processing, or membership at this time, either
because we'll do it later, or it's being done by another team.

So if you think you have something groovy, great, cunning or clever to say
about anything that would fall into that list of topics, please get back to
me.  I'll probably have to ask a few nosey questions about demographics and
staffing and budgets, just to get an idea of how your scale of operations
compares to ours.
Thanks a lot,

Dear Collective Brain,

I have a patron who wishes to find a book from her childhood, but we have
not been able to find it. I wonder if the title that she is given me is the
right one. Are any of you familiar with a picture book written perhaps in
the 70's or 80's about a clown named Giovanni? According to the story as she
remembers it, Giovanni was upset because everyone laughed at him as soon as
they saw him. He decided not to be a clown anymore and took off the paint
from his face. However he discovered that he missed people laughing around
him and decided to keep his face painted until his death.

She believes that the title is "Giovanni the Clown". I have searched A to Z
and WorldCat as well as on line bookstores. Any other ideas?

First, I'd like to thank all of you who sent me the Joan Lowery Nixon
obituary information.  Next time, I'll know to use the NEWS feature on
Google.  I have never used that particular search tool.  Thanks again!

I'd like to add my two cents worth to the discussion of the newest Harry
Potter.  I finally finished it on Friday.  My 12-year-old son had to read it
first!  I thought it was very good.  Harry is definitely suffering from
teenage angst!  Had I read the book before cataloging it, I would have put
all copies in our teen collection.  I put two in children's and two in
teens.  I just feel like this is not a Harry that younger children will
understand or relate well to, even my 8-year-old son who can't wait to read
the book.  I will probably change the cataloguing.  Does anyone else feel
this way after reading it?

A customer asked about a chapter book she remembers reading as a fifth
grader around 1983. She thinks it was a boy who ranaway from home to live
in a mall. She remembers most clearly that he talked to a statue named
Michael that was in the middle of a fountain in the mall. She thinks the
word "peace" may have been in the title.

Can you help? This sounds like one that should trigger a memory. Thanks in

The library that I work for is currently examining the way we keep track
of reference statistics. For example, we are considering keeping track
of whether a reference question was asked by an adult, teen, or child. I
am interested in knowing if any of your libraries keep track of
reference transactions by age, and if you do, what do you use the
information for? Thank you.

Hi All!

Well, I am happy to report the majority of readers responding to the above
post are pleased with the latest HP book.  I have not received any other
negative comments.  Looks like JK's done it again!
Thanks to everyone who took time to share their thoughts.

Thanks so much to everyone who responded with titles of books with birds as

get more at the local library. I really appreciate all of you who don't took
