Hello all,
I'm looking for patterns or ideas on how to make a small quilt/wall hanging
for our library that incorporates storybook or other popular fictional
characters or scenes. Right now it's just a very small germ of an idea, so
I'd welcome any suggestions or guidance. Thanks!

Several years ago we did place Spanish stickers on the
spines of the books but the books were still filed with
everything else. This past year we consulted some Hispanic
patrons and they agreed that the books were better seperated
from the regular collection. Now we have all the spanish
easy books at the end of the easy book section and the same
thing with our beginning readers, except they are at the
beginning. We have also entered the word Spanish in the
call # field and placed Spanish signs on the shelves above
the areas. We have not put the non-fiction or fiction
seperate yet since we have very few books in those areas.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi everyone. I'm in kind of creative mood for future planning, and
resting on the laurels of our summer reading program. (with 2 free weeks
'til fall registration begins) I'm wondering if you all might send me a
brief listing of 5 or so random programs that worked well for you either
this summer or in the recent past. I will compile the listing into an
easily digestible format and post back to the list. For instance, here's
a list of some things that worked for us this summer... (pix on our
website at: http://www.mcl.org/ys/knlaw034.html)
You can send any type of idea: performance, music, reading, in-house
programs, arts & crafts, etc. I'll try to organize them that way in the
summary. I'm thinking this will be a condensed list of ideas to use as a
springboard rather than in-depth how-to information. Thanks in advance
if you're willing to help! (deadline, August 26th)

Becky,
Please share your responses with the group. I too am looking for big
books.
So far I have found a few with BWI and a few from Scholastic. When I
called
Scholastic I got no where but then rec'd a RIF catalog with big books
listed. I called their RIF department and they said I could just buy from
that catalog. So if you get the run around like I did - ask for their RIF
dept. I also found a few on Amazon.com.
I am also looking for big books in Spanish which is even harder to find.
If
anyone knows of a source, please let me know.
Thanks, Marge

We file our Spanish materials in the 468's alongside our other foreign
language materials, including French, Italian, German, Arabic, etc, in the
youth non-fiction area. We do have signage in that area, which helps,
along with our foreign language board book/Big book cart in that area.
As for our youth a/v foreign language materials, they are also filed in
the 400's within those collections. We're also thinking about making
bookmarks that list each of the languages we have and where in the 400s
they are. We have experienced a growing need for foreign language
materials, as have other communities, and when you don't have the space to
separate the collection, this is a temporary solution. Hope this helps!

Subject: Re: Disney
I disagree that Disney movies are getting children to read the books that
the movies are based on. I think that it is quite the opposite. Disney
produces it's own books to go with the movies: large storybooks with
sweeping illustrations, book and tape sets, paperbacks, and the like.
Patrons think these are the "real" books, even when the library
refuses to
carry them or tries to introduce the originals. Patrons insist on the
"children's version" (even when we explain that the original _is_ a
children's book) or the "real book" (even when we try to defend the
authenticity of the original) or they turn to their child and say, "We'll
have to go to Borders for it." In my experience, patrons will only take the
original title for _Holes_ and the Harry Potter movies. I have never run
into a patron willing to take home Hans Christian Anderson, Collodi, Lisa
and Lottie, etc.

I've had at least two computers die since subscribing to this

means, let's begin. There are obvious series like Philip Aardagh's Eddie

I'm not sure what else qualifies as "like a Series of Unfortunate

Hello, all --
A patron has come in to object in the strongest possible terms to the
display of Heather Has Two Mommies, by Leslea Newman in our picture book
section. Our director is composing a written response, and has asked me to
compile reviews of the book to quote in her letter.
I've got some, but the one I really want is from Booklist. I know Booklist
reviewed the book at some point, because a particularly glowing remark from
the review is quoted both on the author's website and at the publisher's
website. (It's unclear from both sites whether the review is of the
original edition from 1989, or of the 10th anniversary edition, which
appeared in 2000, but I suspect the former.)
However, I can't lay my hands on the review, because my library recycles all
our issues that are more than 4 years old. Sadly, I can't even tell what
issue the review ran in, because my library recycled the Index in which it
would have appeared long ago, and PDFs of Booklist's index are only
available back to 1997. (I checked the Indices that are available online,
and the book wasn't reviewed in any of the available years.)
If any of my colleagues in the Collective Brian of PUBYAC have access to a
copy of the original review, and would be willing to send me a copy (via
snail mail, e-mail, or fax), I would be most grateful. Please contact me
off-list if you have a copy to share!
Thanks so much in advance,
Sophie
