Hello All,
In January I will be starting a baby time and a toddler time at my branch.
I am in the process of gathering material to use and planning for some
play/exploration time for the babies and toddlers after the stories are
finished. One thing I would like to do is have a sensory "station,"
probably a small plastic tub or two since there is no room in my branch (or
money) for a sensory table. Has anyone else done something like this? If
so, what did you use for the container and what kinds of things did you put
in it? Finally, do you have any tips/advice/do's and don'ts?
I will make a compilation and post it back to the board. Thank you.

Hi all,
I was wondering if you all out there have some "must have" mag titles
for
your children's and/or YA collections. My library serves a growing
community (Holt) in suburban Lansing, MI. Since we are part of a district
library, we serve the entire area, both suburban and urban (if you can call
Lansing "urban"). Currently, we subscribe to:
Your Big Backyard
Babybug
Disney Adventures
Nickelodeon
National Geographic Kids
Zoobooks
American Girl
Boys Life
MAD
Nintendeo
Game Pro
SI for Kids
Thrasher
Soccer Jr.
I thought about Cricket, but I know there has been discussion before about
some libraries discontinuing their subscriptions to Cricket. What are your
suggestions? What are we missing? I have money for two or three new
subscriptions. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi PUBYACers-
I'm working on a booklist of picture books by artistic media (charcoal,
watercolor, collage, etc.) for a recurring assignment at the local
university.
Now I need your help. Who can provide me with titles of picture books
that are illustrated with clay/plasticine, etc.? Barbara Reid's books are
included, as well as Victoria Raymond's illustrations in "Still Life

Can you think of others? I'll gladly provide the web address when the

Nadine:
You make a good point that, logically, cell phone use/abuse should be
covered by existing library conduct regs (your anti-noise rule, below). If
parents are using their cell phones rather that paying attention to their
kids, maybe you can remind them that they are responsible for their kids'
behavior and safety. I include safety because people seem less likely to
turn around and blame their kids for safety risks (hey, they'll probably
blame you!). If you gently remind the parents that, although you did well
in track in high school, you're not really up to hurdling your desk and
dashing after their precious ones when they make a beeline for the...(fill
in the blank, stairs, elevator, door, etc.). If you have any sort of
lobby, coffee shop or other public space, recommend that area as a place
better suited for extended cell chats. You could also mutter something
about recent studies linking overuse of cell phones to brain cancer (I
actually did hear that somewhere but, heck, there's a study out there to
prove almost anything). Good luck.

Good questions! I went to the same "staffing for results"
workshops but
have never completed the analysis process. I'd be very interested in
seeing
the results of your survey.
We have 5 branches and serve a two county area that includes a city of just
under 100,000. (Albany, NY) So I think we qualify!
1) In the Main Library, the Children's Department has one FT Librarian II
(me- Head of the Dept.), one FT Librarian I, and three PT Librarian I, plus
two substitute LI's that work infrequently. Each of the four neighborhood
branches has one FT LI.
2) Youth services staff have very little time actually scheduled OFF desk.
We do most of our work while we are also on desk. But we all probably
spend
about half our time working on projects.
3) Full time librarians do one program per week, part time do one per month.
4) I am always trying to schedule more hours with more than one, or even
more than two at a time. I would guess it works out to about 34 hours per
week (out of 69) or about 50%. This actually surprises me,
perhaps
because no one staff person is alone 50% of the time. I would have guessed
that one-person-at-the-desk was a smaller percentage. But I took into
account meal breaks and programs.
5) We answer between 700 and 1200 reference questions per month. The
average is probably about 900 this year. It keeps going up every year
(whereas computer usage is actually leveling off!)
Please do send me your results, and good luck with your own process.
