I have a patron looking for a version of "Cinderella" she first saw
about 9 years ago (the book is probably older than that). She doesn't
know the author or illustrator, but it's illustrated in black-and-white
line drawings, no color, with realistic but elongated figures (long
flowing gowns, post-Renaissance type dress), very detailed pictures.
It's not the Susan Jeffers' version...
Does anyone recognize this?

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far!! I don't mean to make our
department a drab place for those who visit, it's just that we've received a
few complaints about the noise from both children and parents who use the
library for school and/or schoolwork. It does become somewhat raucous once
school lets out. I think that I have become more aware of the noise
recently because of two events: one was where I was a chain bookstore and
was almost in shock because of the silence and, the second incident was when
a mother yelled for her daughter across our department. Her daughter's
response was, "Mom, you can't yell in here! It's the library!!" :)

RE: Shannon VanHemert's (PUBYAC Moderator) request:
It would be a really great idea if all PUBYAC-related e-mail contained the
Subject line "PUBYAC." I, too, am losing a lot of valid and interesting
messages to my filters. Is there any reason we can't do this?

Subject: Puppet Stage Question
Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 10:06:49 CDT
Hi, everyone. My library is considering purchasing a puppet stage from
Pick-Me Products out of Levelland, Texas. The stages that we are
considering are the Standing Solo Stage and the Pack-Up Stage. Have any of
you purchased a stage from them? Have you purchased one of these? How
durable would you say they are? I would appreciate any information or
opinions that you have. Please direct them to t_l_partridge@yahoo.com. If
people express interest, I would be glad to post the responses to the
listserv. Thanks for your assistance.

Subject: keynote speaker?
Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 10:07:19 CDT
My apologies for any listserv duplication.
Every other year, the State Library of Iowas sponsors a fabulous conference
called "Kids First". This two-day conference is devoted solely to youth
services and is a treasure trove of ideas and inspiration.
The next Kids First will be held in spring of 2005. In the past, we've had
keynote speakers such as Walter Minkel and Renee Vaillancourt. We would
like to continue this tradition of excellence.
Have you heard a youth-services-related speaker who really inspired you? Do
you know of someone who can't wait to set librarians on fire with their
enthusiasm and knowledge? Please, let me know!

Subject: Summer Library Program Manual Available
Date: Fri, 3 Oct 2003 10:07:40 CDT
The 2004 Teen Summer Library Program Manual from the State Library of Iowa
is now available. Teens will "Discover New Trails At Your Library" with
programs, displays, booklists and more.
You can discover western trails, trails of exploration, inner trails, and
backyard trails. Volunteer opportunities abound and are clearly marked.
And teen-friendly artwork completes the package.
And what a deal! Only $5.00, plus $2.00 shipping and handling. Go to
www.bettendorflibrary.com/teen/discover.htm
<http://www.bettendorflibrary.com/teen/discover.htm> to order and take a
peek at sample artwork.
(Although I wrote this and my husband illustrated it, this isn't BSP, since
the proceeds all go to support YA services in the state of Iowa.)

This sounds like a situation where some serious contact with the school is
needed. You are not sending out flyers for a frivolous program but for a
READING incentive program. You are on THEIR TEAM! Quote them the research
that shows that kids who read 20 minutes most days in the summer go back to
school at a higher reading level than where they left and those who do not,
seriously regress. (I'm sure I can find you the research to quote if you
don't locate it yourself -- just let me know.) I'm sure their kids'
performance on standardized tests is measured and compared to other
districts -- the last thing they should want is poor reading performance...
They should not only want the flyers but want to have you come to the
schools to PROMOTE the program.
Note: We distribute the completed reading logs to the students through the
public schools in September so teachers can see how much (we count time)
their kids read over the summer. Some savvy schools and teachers even
provide students who participated with little rewards or a recognition
ceremony when they return in September.

I had been sending flyers in the past, as well and that seems to have
worked really well. This year the schools in our area are cracking down on
flyers. They will only allow flyers to be distributed during registration at
the
beginning of the year, and again between semesters. Which leaves us out,
as sending a summer reading program flyer in January would be
counterproductive.
I was curious if others have run into this same situation?
