Here is another stumper.  Patron is looking for a book she remembers from
her childhood 1960-1970.  Features a gaint pancake with bees eating the
syrup.  If you have any ideas, let me know.

Greetings,
A patron is looking for a "chapter book" in which a little girl meets a
giant. The giant shows her good dreams and bad dreams, then catches the bad
dreams and eats them, saying "scrump-diddly-umptious."  I've checked A to
Zoo,  Best Books for Children, Amazon, and our own collection.  Any help is
greatly appreciated.  Please contact me off list and I will post the
results.  Thank you.

Hello,
=20
A big thank you to all who contributed ideas for multicultural resources
re: my library's grant.  Below are the suggestions I received.  I think
they will be extremely helpful.

I just got a catalog with a lot of neat multicultural stuff.  It is
called Culture for Kids  their website is www.cultureforkids.com
<outbind://2/www.cultureforkids.com>   I also am working on a
multicultural grant.  I had about $5000 to spend.  I've bought country
books, cook books, different types of religion books, bilinguial books
and fairy tales from other lands.  I also bought multicultural costumes
for the kids to play with, musical instruments from other lands, music
from other countries (Music for Little People is a good source),
multicultural puppets, multicultural doll house people for our doll
house, a kit about Day of the Dead, CD-ROMs to learn Spanish and
English, and Videos about other countries and cultural traditions.

I've had a lot of fun ordering neat stuff. =20
=20
Okay, first off - go to the souther poverty law center website and sign
up for all their freebies - Teaching Tolerance magazine, videos on Rosa
Parks, a music book and CD called 'Won't you be my fiend?"  All are free
and you can send for these on librray letterhead.  Every library should
have these and they are all free!

=20

The, go the free spirit publishing page, they have a print catalog as
well, and look at their offerings.

=20

There are lots of YA novels -

Go and Come Back -Abelove?

All Jacqueline Woodson novels

Make Lemonade Trilogy

House on mango Street - cisneros

Walter Dean Myers novels - especially Monster, fallen Anegls, etc
Beverly Naidoo  novels (author's name spelling?) Mahalia - Horniman
Romiette and Julio - Draper (also any of her other novels) An Na
(author) - A Step from Heaven

=20

Also, don't forget poetry -

Paint me Like I am - Nikki Giovanni

Tupac's - A Rose That grew From concrete

=20

I would access the New York Public Librray Teen Book List - great ideas
for nonfiction and fiction.  or, contact the librarian there in the
Young Adult / teen section.  they have an awards ceremony every year for
top titles for teens and publish a list. =20

=20

Also, howabout a poster set from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum on
tolerance?  Oh, the Southern poverty law Center has a free poster set
with children's artwork and quotes, so this may be a better source and
its free.

=20

There's an annotated bibliography called "Once Upon a Heroine:  450
Great Books for Girls" that indexes by different subjects, including
multi-cultural.  It's also sorted by reading level so you should be able
to find quite a few books in there.  And of course, just because it says
"Girls" doesn't mean boys won't like them, too!

=20

What a great dilemma to have!  Here are some YA novels that I like:

=20

Childress, Alice - A Hero Ain't Nothin' but a Sandwich; Crowe, Chris -
Mississippi Trial, 1955; Draper, Sharon M. - Romiette & Julio; Grimes,
Nikki - Jazmin's Notebook; Hewett, Lorri - Soulfire; Lynch, Chris -
Mick; Meyer, Carolyn - Jubilee Journey; Myers, Walter Dean - 145th
Street: Short Stories; Rinaldi, Ann - Hang a Thousand Trees With
Ribbons; Sebestyen, Ouida - Words by Heart; Soto, Gary - Taking Sides;
Southgate, Martha - Another way to Dance; Staples, Suzanne Fisher -
Dangerous Skies; Williams-Garcia, Rita - Fast Talk on a Slow Track

=20

Lee and Low is a good web site, they have an emphasis on multicultural
books with Hispanic, AA, Asian American, Native American, etc. Quality
books as well!

www.leeandlow.com <http://www.leeandlow.com/>=20

=20

Also Cynthia Leitich Smith's web site (search under her name plus web
site on google, and you'll get it) has multicultural book lists...

=20

Check on ccbc through Univ Wisconsin and they have a great bilingual
book list,

Good luck, that is a wonderful dilemma to be in!

=20

I recommend trying the BWI site www.bwibooks.com
<http://www.bwibooks.com/>   You do have to register but it is free and
I believe they have a multicultural list that you can search by grade
level.

Our small to medium-sized public library will be starting a program where
teens will assist library computer users.  Our first teen wanted to
volunteer
and after assessing her strengths and interests, we thought she would be an
asset by assisting with technology during our peak computer usage times.  Do
you have any experience with either a volunteer or paid position such as
this
one?  I welcome your comments and suggestions.

May I point out that in this case the patron is only in fifth grade?

In general, why do we assume that teens want edgy books? Isn't it our
job to know a range of alternatives?

Interesting questions, Terrill, but I wonder--what is really the best
way to teach young people how to deal with challenges and to build
character?

Seekers of the 'clean teen' ....

This is just a moments thought, please don't take offense those
enquiring
about clean YA fiction ..... the fact is, the life of most teens is
not
clean and obscenity free .... even those with uniforms and good homes
and
stable environments ...... its their job to experiment and that
includes
language, wannabe-adult activity, and just general obnoxious acting
out. To
find books that are devoid of that must be a challenge, and those
stories
are are avoiding part of the teen reality. Don't get me wrong, I wish
it
were different, that we could teach them not to swear (whereas all we
are
really teaching them, is where NOT to swear), that we could teach them
to
consider others as they would themselves (they want to be treated in
the way
they treat others, thats why they do what they do ... they want to feel
the
extremes, perhaps, even briefly). The thing with teens is exposing them
to
the world, and helping them manage it with courage and strength.

Having said that, I truly believe there is nothing wrong with reading
fantasy ... in the adult reading world it is one of the most popular
genres
(next to mystery). Maybe the parameters of the fantasy section in YA
should
be changed to include more than alien activity in outer space, but the
out
of this world goings on of todays teens.

Thanx for letting me toss this out to the world, raised teens, love 'em
in
the library, but know they are just doing THEIR job! In nature the
herd
often runs them out because they are so anti-anti-anti group! We
civilized
humans try and accept and work with them and get them past it with
their
dignity and self-confidence intact, and not having to run them out on
to the
savanna.

Just my feelings du jour ... by happy to hear what others think on
this
matter.

Thanks so much to all of you who sent in your library's favorites.  They
all helped me formulate my list of the favorites here.  For those of you
who wanted to see the results, here it is:

Captain Underpants   Pilkey
Circle of Magic (and other series)  Pierce
Harry Potter    Rowling
Henry and Mudge Rylant
Holes Sachar
Junie B. Jones Park

Subject: daycare outreach question
Date: Tue,  4 Nov 2003 02:14:18 CST

Hi all, I have a situation I am hoping I can get some help with.  I don't
even know what to call it but here is the problem:
Awhile ago a private parent/child organization approached me to do a PJ
storytime for their group at the library.  They reserved the meeting room
and wanted me to run the program but it would be only for their members.
My director said that I could only do something like that if it was open
to the public since I am not for "hire".  The group was ok with this and
I did help them select books and songs, etc.  My problem now is that I
approached my director about doing daycare/preschool outreach in the
community and she thought there might be a problem if this organization
finds out.  I don't really see how they are related since I thought doing
outreach was part of my job and that these are like schools and the other
is a private organization but she thinks because they are private
daycares then it's the same thing and she just doesn't want it to come
back and haunt us.  I have never done daycare outreach and it has not
been done at this library in the past (at least not the recent past).  I
am hoping people who do daycare & preschool outreach can help me justify
this service, not just to my director but also to the community, if it
ever came to that.  If you have any thoughts on the matter and/or if you
have anything in your job description about daycare outreach I would love
your input!
Thanks in advance, April

For the information services part of my YA services class, and as a
reality check, I'm updating the list of repetitive YA school
assignments I did a year or so ago. Can you list the top 5
assignments that occur every year for middle through high school-age
kids?

I'll compile the results for the list.

Thanks very much,

**Please excuse the cross posting**I had a patron come in today looking for
a book, of which she couldn't recall the title or the author. She read it
about 7-10 years ago, and she remembers it was a YA fantasy, and part of a
trilogy. It is was about a group of teenagers playing a board game who get
sucked into the game and then find themselves in an alternate world. One of
the characters may have been named Julian.I have checked our catalog,
Amazon, Bookbrowser and Alibris. Please send your replies directly to me.
