This one goes out to librarians in public libraries only --
How many copies of books on the local schools' summer reading lists do =
you purchase?
Do any of you get the schools' copies of these books to circulate from =
your library while school is not in session?
Thanks in advance for any advice or information you can provide!

I bought all sets of the Nora Gaydos and Bob Books several years ago. Yes,
they are a bit of a pain to circulate and many here at my library were a bit
put out about the purchase.  They have been very welcomed by the parents,
however, and they are highly circulated with little loss.  Each of the 10-15
books in a set is cataloged and then the entire set is kept in a hanging bag
along with other kits, tapes and like media.

Parents especially like checking out each set as their children progress in
tbeir reading abilities.  I think that is where weas librarians can be
especially helpful; the Bob Books are not meant to be read over and over and
over but are stepping stones and it is a great service to the community if
we purchase and circulate these reading aids so that parents do not have to
purchase them.

I don't know--where does it end?  Do you have to provide programming for
everyone who wants it--adults with severe dementia, schizophrenic young
people?  How can you be expected to do that?

When you say "special needs"--does the child rock and scream, wander and
poke, is s/he in a wheelchair, can s/he use the toilet alone?

I'd suggest a respite care program, but the only one I can find in Suffolk
is for old people.

Does anyone circulate Bob Books?

We do; they're in a display from the publisher on top of the shelves, and
they circulate separately, just like any paperback.

Thank you to everyone who sent me ideas for my pizza storytime. =20
********************************************************

One of the books I read for a Pizza storytime was William Steig's
"Pete's a Pizza".  After hearing the story, the parents made a pizza out
of their children the way Pete's father did.  I had precut red paper =
squares
for tomatoes and white paper for cheese.  The kids especially enjoyed
being kneaded and stretched.  I passed out the paper as I came to each
ingredient, while narrating the "instructions."

Introduction:  I'm thinking of something that is round.
           It is red and white.
           It comes in a box.

*******************************************************We did a pizza =
storytime last spring, and a couple of the books that I used that went =
over really well with the preschoolers were:
Curious George and the Pizza
The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza, and
Hi Pizza Man! (lots of animals - very fun!)

We did a craft with small paper plates where the kids colored the paper =
plate red (sauce), glued "pepperoni" (red circles), sausage (brown =
circles) and "green peppers" green strips on, and then sprinkled on some =
"cheese"  (gold glitter). =20

The only song I could think of using pizza was a version of "On Top of Old =
Smokey"
On top of my pizza, all covered with sauce,
Some pepperoni fell off and it got lost.
It rolled off the table, and onto the floor,
and then the poor pepperoni, it rolled out the door.

On top of my pizza, all covered with cheese,
I lost all my sausage (or mushrooms, green peppers, etc.) when somebody =
sneezed.
It rolled off the table, and onto the floor,
and then the poor sausage, it rolled out the door.

You could also do something with Patty Cake:
Pizza pie, pizza pie, pizza man!
Bake me a pizza as fast as you can.
Mix it and bake it and top it with some cheese,
And put it in the oven for (child's name) and me!

Definitely post a compilation, because I would love some ideas for the =
future!

I have done a pizza theme.

First, I make a pizza out of felt, with all the appropriate toppings.

Out of the oven
Into the Box
Into the car
and UPSIDE DOWN!!
I am a pizza... dropped on teh ground.

I was a pizza
I was the best
I was a pizza
Now I am a mess.

Pete's a Pizza by William Steig is great.  You can have the kids help

I like to read Pizza Pat (Rita Gelman), Hi Pizza Man
(Virginia Walter), and A Job for Wittilda (Caralyn
Buehner) when I do a storytime on pizza.  If you have
slightly older kids you can tell Hi Pizza Man using
pictures or puppets, or the kids themselves can even
act out the book with the puppets.  I also have a
large posterboard (red, of course) with large letters
spelling out pizza, along with a picture of the
correct sign language for each letter.  We sing the
song below and then spell out pizza in sign language.
I also have the kids do a flannelboard pizza activity.
Just start out with a round, tan shape for the crust,
and have lots of different colored shapes for the kids
to choose from.  They take turns coming up to the
board, where they select a topping, and tell everyone
what it is before placing it on the crust.  They come
up with some great ideas!  For crafts, you can make a
paper pizza very easily, but why stop there?  You can
make real pizzas!  Just have the kids spoon jarred or
canned pizza sauce and sprinkle shredded cheese onto
English muffin or pita halves (you can have other
toppings available if you want, but the kids are
usually happy with their cheese pizzas) and pop them
into a toaster oven.

P-I-Z-Z-A  (tune: B-I-N-G-O)

There's a food we love to eat
And Pizza is it's name-oh.
P-I-Z-Z-A, P-I-Z-Z-A, P-I-Z-Z-A
And pizza is it's name-oh.

Hope these ideas help, and have fun.

CML Kids.com  http://www.cml.lib.oh.us/cmlkids/morecrafts.cfm  has a =
booklist and a craft.

I did a feltboard from the Hummingbird site called "Pizza Shop":
Down around the corner in the pizza shop,
There were lots of pieces of pizza with pepperoni on top.
Along came (child's name) all alone.
He/she bought one that had (number) pepperoni,
And took it home.
 - I made a bunch of pizza slices (tan felt with white felt cheese) and =
glued different numbers of pepperoni slices (dark red felt) on top of =
each. Children came up and removed the pizza slice with the correct number =
of pepperoni.

Our patrons love Pete's a Pizza by William Steig. It's silly and it =
features both a dad and pizza.=20
As for a craft - make paper pizzas. We made these once and they were a big =
hit. You cut out circles from paper grocery bags and paint them red, =
leaving the edges bare for a crust. Then the kids glue on paper cut outs =
of mushrooms, pepperoni, green peppers, onions, etc., all the usual =
toppings. For cheese use off white yarn cut into inch-long pieces and =
pulled apart. The yarn requires liguid glue (a la Elmer's), but the other =
things only require a glue stick.
When we did this I did the painting and cutting ahead of time, but if you =
have the time/room/patience/all of the above the kids can do their own =
painting.

But all teh rest was mine-o!

I had a pizza that I shared
One piece went to my father.
P (clap, clap, clap, clap)
P (clap, clap, clap, clap)
P (clap, clap, clap, clap)
But all the rest was mine-o!

I had a pizza that I shared
One piece is all I'm left-o.

   "     "     "     "     "
And now that piece is gone-o!

ON TOP OF MY PIZZA
(Tune:  On Top of Old Smokey)

On top of my pizza
All covered with suce
Could not find the mushrooms
I think they got lost.

I looked in the closet
I looked in teh sink
I looked in the cup that
Held my cola drink.

I looked in the saucepan
Right under the lid.
No matter where I looked
Those mushrooms stayed hid.

Next time you make pizza
I'm begging you, please,
Do not give my mushrooms,
but just plain old cheese.

I'd love to see what other ideas you receive.
Have fun with this!

Hi Swalena,

When we did a food storytime, I "made" a pizza flannelboard.

We started with a crust, had everyone mix and knead it, then flatten it =
and toss it in the air. =20
Then what should we add--tomato sauce!  (red felt)
Then what--

have the kids add their ingredients--

pepperoni
cheese
green olives
peppers (green and red)
anything else you can think of.  I think we had little gray anchovies, =
too.

It's kind of a combo fingerplay and flannelboard--but they loved it.  The =
next week they asked me what we were going to make!  Unfortunately, the =
stories were about bears!

Happy New Year to you all.
I was wondering if any of you have an evaluation form that you
use at your library as a tool for reviewing your colleaque's progress
and growth?
I would like to begin doing this in my department and could
use some suggestions. If you have a moment to share yours with me,
I would greatly appreciate it. I can be reached at karp@tln.lib.mi.us.

I would like to express my disappointment in this year's winner of the
Newbery and this seemed like the most appropriate place to do that.  I tried
to read DiCamillo's book, but couldn't get through it.  After about 80 pages
(more than Nancy Pearl's minimum length), I had to throw it down in disgust.
I felt like the tone was oppressive and patronizing.  I didn't like any of
the characters.  Only one person I know has read it all the way through and
she felt like she forced herself to finish it because it was the winner (she
read it last night).  We are wondering if DiCamillo won because she should
have won for Winn-Dixie.  Talking amongst ourselves in Eugene, however, we
couldn't come up with any American books that should have won this year.
There were British and Australian releases that we enjoyed, but little by
American authors.  Are any of you disappointed in this year's winner?  What
do you think should have won?  If you enjoyed the book, could you explain
why (perhaps I missed something)?  If there are any members of the committee
that read PUBYAC, I would love to know the basis for selection.

Thank you,
Aimee

I have a young boy looking for a picture book about an elephant
who finds three ducklings, two boys and one girl. The elephant teaches
the ducklings how to swim, how to quack, and how to fly. At the end of the
book, the mother duck finds the ducklings, and thanks the elephant for
watching them.
