Hello,

For the children's librarian with rapidly sinking circulation stats:  have your resident circulation guru run a report of how many of your juvenile cardholders have cards blocked by fines or overdue items...and while they're at it, have them run a separate report on how many adult cardholders have blocked cards.

When faced with the same scenario you report, one of the branches of the Columbus, Ohio public library system found that MANY of their patrons had blocked cards, which led to this dramatic decrease in circulation.   They instituted a program in which children (and teens) could come into the librarian and "read off their fines" by reading to the children's librarian, and to volunteers.  They saw HUGE increases in circulation at this urban branch.  I don't remember which branch, but look Columbus Pub. up on the internet and email them.  Somebody will connect you with the right person.

Everything you're doing is the right stuff - just keep at it - and keep the faith.

Best of luck,

Maggie Bollar

Warning!!!!

The artwork prepared for this summer reading program is protected by copyright (I attended a state library workshop by the author of the manual, who's husband is the artist).  Unless your state participates in this program at the STATE level and has paid the royalties, using the artwork is an infringement of the copyright.  Not every state belongs, so if you are in doubt, you might want to contact your state library.  According to their website (www.summerlibraryprogram.org), the following states belong:

Alaska, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

It is a big help.  Although I'm not exactly using their theme, I am able to use some of the artwork in the material I'm preparing for my teen club this summer, which is using Survivor as the theme.

This site is the home page for Badge-a-Minit.  We have used both the hand
press and table top press shown on the home page.  Currently we use the
table top press to make buttons at ball tournaments and make over 500 in 4-5
days.  It is very easy to learn to use.  I think the parts for buttons run
about $1.00 each for the 3 inch buttons when bought in quantity.

Hi everyone,
I've exhausted my searches for this book and I'm hoping you can
help.  The patron feels certain the illustrator's last name is
Landford and the book is a picture book about a forest.  She says
the illustrator is known for his landscape paintings and the book
was new about ten years ago.  I've tried our catalog, WorldCat,
every kind of keyword search I can think of on the internet.
Anybody have an idea?
Please reply to me and I'll post the answer to everyone.
Thanks,
Kim Flores

A group of local sixth grade teachers have requested bibliotherapy. At their 3rd to 6th grade school, a handful of girls have become intensely manipulative and caused some serious social issues (bullying, alcohol, sexual bravado, etc). There is a lot of peer pressure and kids are reporting they don't feel safe. I had a couple of ideas about books that deal with mean girls, such as The Girls by Koss. But the teachers would also like some books for these boys that are feeling very manipulated by the girls and confused by the situation. Here I am pulling a blank, particularly because these are 6th graders and some of the standard "teen issue" fare would go over their heads.
Anybody out there have some book recommendations for mean girls and the boys they manipulate (that are reasonably appropriate for 12 year olds)? Please respond to me off the list and I will compile and mail back. I'd really appreciate the help!

Thank you,
