Subject: stumper: Andrew's Meadow?
Looking for information about a picture book read in the 60's that might
be titled "Andrew's Meadow". A boy builds a treehouse in a meadow and
then builds several different treehouses for each of his friends. This may
include a castle treehouse and a boat treehouse. Have already checked the
usual sources but I thought it may sound familiar to someone.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Stumper - Soup
Hello - I have subscribed to PUBYAC for some time but this is the first
time I have posted to the list. My name is Linda Rauenbuehler and I am a
children's librarian in Henderson, Nevada.
We have a patron looking for a story that is unfamiliar to all the
children's people here. We looked in the "Storyteller's Sourcebook"
and "A
to Zoo" but could not find anything that sounds like the story she wants.
This story was probably in a primary reader 15-20 years ago. She remembers
the family in the story is Hispanic. The mother is making soup. First she
must go to the store to buy ingredients for the soup. On her way she meets
various family members. They each ask her not to put certain vegetables in
the soup. In the end the soup is nothing but water.
Our patron would be so grateful if she could find that story again.
TIA

I have a patron who is trying to remember the name of a book from
childhood. She said it was a Newbery winner, but I can't find
anything even among the Honor books that fits her vague descriptions.
She is looking for a chapter book about a stegosaurus, published
prior to 1971, the year she was in 4th grade. I'll take any and all
possibilities. I've tried a computer search but drew a blank and
don't have any resources to search for fiction that old, unless it is
an award winner and I couldn't find anything.
Thanks for your suggestions. Please send to me directly at:

I'm looking for YA or children's fiction books on anorexia nervosa or
bulimia. I've tried Books in Print and found several non-fiction books.
Thanks for your help.

Subject: Biography Songs/Poems/Story
Dear PUBYACers:
My name is Goehrig Orr, I'm finishing up my M.L.S. from Indiana
University, and I work part-time at the Carmel Clay Public Library as a
library assistant in the children's department.
In September, I doing a 3 one-hour sessioned program for children (30 max)
on Biography, that is, with a Capital "B" - utilizing elements of
journaling, biography, and (auto)biography. The program is called:
All About Me: Now, Then, and Again -- which will cover their now, past,
and future. I'll be including writing for the fun of it, songs, poetry,
booktalking, and even (one at this point) a story - folktale to illustrate
that our life can be a story.
I'm going to check the Children's Poetry Index (poems), 784's (songs-camp
songs) for songs and poems. So far I have used resources such as Huck, and
Zarnowski - have plenty of good biographies in the collection. I've also
brainstormed with a 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teacher on writing and reading
stuff, as well as asking 3-5 graders I see in our SRP about "if they were
to go to the library and learn about a real person {alive or deceased},
who would it be? Recieved predictable (sports, gymnastics, swimmers) types
as well as people like Van Gogh, Einstein, Grissom (early astronaut),
etc...
This is where I am, but I would like to ask PUBYACers about specific
suggestions on the following that you've used successfully with kids in
one or all three of grades 3-5:
1. Specific songs dealing with a real person's life (or famous event in
their life) - can be legend status, but *not* tall tales - need
music.
2. Specific poems dealing with a real person's life (or famous event in
their life) - can be legend status , but *not* tall tales -
recommended collection or individual poem.
3. A story (storytelling, not read-aloud) about a real person's life (or
famous event, or famous characteristic) - can be legend staus, but *not*
tall tale. [I have one, legend/folktale status -- How Abunwas was Exiled
- -- from Courlander's __Ethiopian__ Collection, but afraid the sophistic
humor may be too much for 3rd grade developmental level. There was an
Abu Nuwas (poet) reknowned for his sharp tongue -- this characteristic
lived on over a thousand years and a thousand miles, as it were.]
Again, I'm not done researching, but looking for examples you have tried
and succeeded with, for grades 3-5.
Thanks for listening,
Goehrig (Orr what?)
