Subject: Stumper - jealous hippopotamus
I am posting this stumper as a favor to a colleague whose library does
not have Internet access (hard to believe, but there are still a few
of those out there!).
A patron come in looking for a book that she says has great
sentimental value to her, and which she read 20-25 years ago to her
own children. It was a picture book about a hippopotamus who thought
his mother preferred his little brother. The patron thought it might
have been called something like "It's Not Fair!" but a search of A-Zoo
and other usual sources has been fruitless (and she's not really sure
of the title anyway).
If anyone can help, please e-mail me at jennifer.pepper@state.me.us
Thanks in advance!

Subject: Re: Robert Heinlein
Dear Fellow Pubyackers,
There were 11 or so books written by Robert Heinlein specifically aimed
at young adults. He hesitated accepting when the publisher asked him to
do it, but then agreed to it. The books are:
Citizen of the galaxy
Between planets
Have space suit- will travel (one of my favorite books from childhood- I
have had 3 copies)
Red planet
Rocket ship Galileo
The rolling stones
Space cadet
The star beast
Time for the stars
Tunnel in the sky
Nearly all of Heinlein's book fit into a timeline that he originated
back in the 40's and 50's; he stuck to even after history didn't go
along with him. This was explained later by different timelines
co-exisiting on (probably) other dimensional planes. By the way, after
I read all of his books when I was about 10 or 11 I then read all of his
adult books. The alternate lifestyles didn't bother me, but each to his
own, I can't speak for other people. Anyone who enjoys Heinlein's books
got a heck of a kick out of the last ones, where he brought all of the
characters together on some strange dimensional plane (it was fun to see
them one last time)
Hope this helps.

Just wanted to say a very belated "Thank you" to everyone who sent me
material for use in my "Otter Adventures" program. I was able to use
most of the suggestions, and the program went quite smoothly. I made
several handouts, including my bibliography and several puzzles,
coloring sheets, etc from internet sites about otters, and would be glad
to share them with PUBYAC readers. Just send your snail-mail address to

Subject: "real" reference librarians
Hi Vickie! I don't blame you for being pissed over this. When the same
thing happened to a friend of mine, who is the head of the Main Children's
Room in a very larger system, she reminded her colleagues that being a
children's librarian was being a "Librarian Plus" not minus. It is an
uphill battle, though. Youth services librarians acquire the stigma of
their users--guilt by association, I think. Keep up the good fight. I also
think it helps to point out that these not-so-thinly-veiled assumptions
hurt, even at the risk of being labelled too thin-skinned.

Subject: P.A.R.P. / Family Reading Programs
Fellow PUBYACkers:
I am a VERY new children's librarian trainee, and as part of my job I
will be in charge of our annual Parents As Reading Partners program in
February 1999. The department head hopes I can come up with some ideas
to increase the numbers of families participating and completing the
program - without breaking the budget. I am going to the NY PARP
conference in October, but I am sure that the collective wisdom of
PUBYAC also has some great ideas. I know we had a lot of talk about
Summer Reading Programs on the list, but the emphasis of this program is
somewhat different. Any ideas, or suggestions as to where I can look for
ideas, would be very welcome.
Thanks in advance,
