Subject: Re: Charges for Borrowing Videos

I've worked at two different libraries -- both charged for videos. My
basic gut reaction is that videos should be free, but I have to admit
when I've been desperate for a promotion, giving a "free video rental"
coupon has been great. Now I kinda think we should charge for more
stuff, so I have more options of things to give away as prizes...

Subject: Help! Wizard mag...

Hello -- please forgive cross postings to various lists...

I would like to hear from ANY and ALL libraries out there who carry the
magazine WIZARD which is a magazine geared towards comic book lovers,
comic book collecting, action figures, reviewing graphic novels etc. If
you carry this magazine in your collection would you please take a moment
to answer these questions? Please respond directly to me. Thank you VERY
much in advance!

1.) Is WIZARD for professional use (to read graphic novel reviews) and/ or
out for the public to read?

2.) If it is out for the public to which audience? children, YA or adult?

3.) If it is the YA area where is your YA area located in relation to your
children's dept.? What is the age range of your primary user?

4.) Have you ever had any challenges or problems with WIZARD?

5.) Do you recommend WIZARD and/or have you ever gathered any reviews or
supporting information to recommend it?

Thanks a lot!

ERIN

start till 2001, and their award is commencing an entire year early???? >>

Am I the only one out there who is sick and tired of people heralding the
year 2000 as the start of the new millenium? I have given up trying to
explain it to people, too confusing.

Subject: more on storytime

Hello, all!
In the ongoing discussion of storytimes, I was wondering how long everyone's story times last. I inherited an actual story HOUR. I tried to change it once, but it upset the parents. Now I have a relatively new group, so it might be easier. I'm hoping to get suggestions from y'all...
Thanks

Subject: Craft for clean-up/tidy-up time

Hello all,

We are planning preschool programs for next week on the theme
"clean-up/tidy-up". Our programmer is looking for a simple craft relating
to this theme that would be appropriate for two year olds. We have
searched through a great many sources. Does anyone out there have
anything? Please reply directly to me.

Subject: Tie-dye

Hello!
Just curious if there are any YA librarians out there who have tried
tie-dye activities. If so, how did it work-- did your library provide
T-shirts, charge a fee..? Did you provide rubber gloves to avoid too much
mess? Was it popular? Any other great YA summer programs I could try?
Thanks!

Ann:
I have done this and it can work just fine. Actually it came out of a
group of 2-4th graders that came to the library afterschool on Wednesdays
before church (We were right near a big church that had Wed. night
activities, so the kids would come afterschool and stay until church
activities started at 5). Eventually I just took them into the storyroom
at about 3:30 and they listened while they colored or did homework. I
didn't really think of it as a storytime and we didn't do anything fancy.
We read Olga da Polga, Lafcadio, some of the Time Warp Trio and some longer
picturebooks. I had this every Wednesday afternoon and then attendance
dried up. I think the church started to offer something then. Who knows,
at anyrate it was a lot of fun and I got to read some of my longer
favorites. I may try it again sometime...thanks for the reminder.

Feel free to write to me if you have other questions pop up.
Kate
