Subject: Stumper: Help for an unwanted child

Hello pubyackers,
A child of about 10 has been adopted by some distant relatives. Her
parents did not want her anymore (!) and they agreed to take her. They are
looking for materials, either for them or for her, that will help her to
understand and deal with this sad situation.
Missing May has been recommended for her. Has anyone else out there dealt
with bibliotherapy materials for this kind of a subject? What would you
recommend?

Thank you very much! Please respond to me at lwilliams@cslib.org.

Hi,

I've been lurking on this list for a couple of years,
but now I need to appeal to your collective wisdom.
A patron is looking for a mouse story she remembers
from the late 1960's. It might be a story in a
collection of stories, or it might be a book in and
of itself. It's about a mouse who has to set out on
a journey and walks and walks until he literally
wears his feet out. She remembers that the story was
illustrated, but cannot recall if it's a picture book
or something lengthier. She does know it's not
"Stuart Little." If this rings any bells, please
email me directly and I'll post the answer to the
list. Many Thanks.

Subject: sex in the library?

Great subject line, yes? <<g>>

My classmates and I are assembling a list of recent YA titles (fiction and
nonfiction) addressing the "Sex?" question. We intend to focus on the
**decision making** process rather than The Deed, and would like to address
a variety of perspectives and decisions, including:

"No." "No, not now." "Yes, but not with you." "Yes, but not with your
gender." "Yes, later." and the perennial favorite:

"Yes!"

Our tattered copies of Judy Blume's _Forever_ assure us that there is
ongoing interest in the topic; we're looking for well-written, modern books
addressing the issue.

I welcome your suggestions and recommendations, and would be happy to share
copies of our finished product with all who are interested. Please
respond directly to me.

Subject: Stumper: Stuffed Toy Pirates

Dear PUBYACers,

Our elementary school aged patron remembers a picture book from the 1980s
in which a little red-haired girl and her stuffed toys magically transform
into a pirate ship and crew, leading to many adventures and a battle with
another pirate ship.

We have checked A to Zoo, our catalog. We know it isn't The Pirates of
Bedford Street, Maggie and the Pirate, or Penelope and the Pirates.

Any info is appreciated. Please respond directly to us at tinman@jcls.org.

Thanks again,

It also lists both significant and trivial historical dates, as well as the birthdays of authors, illustrators, and other famous people. The price shown on this paperback copy is $6.99 in the U.S.

I am so hoping someone remembers this book. The patron remembers
a juvenile story about a boy who wants a puppy, so mom has him
go to the store and get a pound of butter and lead it home on a
leash. He also does this with a loaf of bread. That's all she
remembers, and we've checked all of our paper (A to Zoo, Best Books,
Books kids will sit still for, etc.) and electronic (local systems,
Amazon.com) systems and can't come up with a title. Does this
ring any bells with people? We would be ever so grateful. Thanks
so much!

Good luck, Sue!
You might want to include folktales, which are part of the oral tradition
and therefore in the public domain if they are "told" rather than "read"
from a copyrighted edition. I do freelance storytelling using mostly
folktales and rhymes (and yes, I charge the going rate for performers in
our area). It's fun to read several versions of a story and come up with
your own retelling.
Have fun!

Subject: BIB: Recipes in Children's Fiction Bibliography

Hello, All:
I submitted a request for recipes found in picture books, juvie fiction, YA
novels, last November. I had a lot of people send their lists and ideas,
including Jen Vanston, Marie Noe, Kate Carter, Paddy Harrigian, Denise
Matulka, Deborah Raiche, Gayle Richardson, Elena Rosenfeld, Kathy Ward,
Brianne Williams, Sarah Swaner, Bette Ammon, Cindy Christin, Helen Mochetti,
Pam Koehler, Brenda Freitas-Obregon, Tammy Daubner, Tori Hodgson, Amy
Lilien, Kim Campbell, and I'm sure there are some I've missed. Thanks to
you all! This list is included in our newly published "Golden Sower
Twentieth Anniversary Cookbook" which also includes over 100 terrific
recipies and anecdotes from the Golden Sower authors and illustrators who've
had books nominated over the past twenty years. (The Golden Sower is
Nebraska's children's choice literary award.) The cookbook will be sold as
a fund raiser for our GS20 2000 Golden Sower Saturday celebration on October
28, 2000, in Omaha, Nebraska. We hope to have three Golden Sower authors
present that day! If any of you are interested in information about Golden
Sower Saturday or in acquiring a cookbook let me know! Again, thanks for
your help in making this list possible!

This recipe bibliography contains picture books, easy readers, and
children's and young adult novels which have recipes included.
