A patron remembers a book she read about 10 years ago (don't know if it
was new at that time.) There were 2 primary characters. One was never
satisfied and always looking for something more or something better. He
couldn't be happy until he got what he was looking for. The second
character said he would give him the perfect present and somehow got
across the message that the perfect present is being happy in the
present. That is all one needs to be happy.

Sound familiar to anyone? If so, please reply to me. Thanks.

Subject: two things

Hi all!

You collective minds are needed.

1) A patron is looking for a book that she thinks is
called *What a View California* with CA being the main
characters name (girl?). Seems like this one was mentioned
before but I can't remember.

2) A 7th and 8th grade teacher is looking for a story about
a sand dollar. She has one short story called the *Legend of
the Sand Dollar* but would like others. Any ideas?

TIA,
Kathy

Hi all,
Here's a stumper for stumper fans...
A patron wanted a book she thinks was published in the '70s. The plot
revolves around a girl who is recoveering from polio and lives with her dad
on a ranch. Her dad captures wild mustangs and trains them, and the girl
tries to save the other wild horses from men who want to round them up to
sell for dog food.

Subject: literary characters related to trees

I have been asked by a teacher for the names of literary characters,
besides Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appleseed, that have anything to do with
trees. She is putting together a unit for 3-4th graders so children's
literary characters would be preferable.

Thanks,

Subject: Nesting doll stories

Hi everyone,

I have a set of Russian nesting dolls (female) and have been looking for a
good story in which to use them. I found one about a "thief" who visits a
town and encounters a family of girls who present him with
preposterous-sounding explanations of things which turn out to be extremely
clever answers to his queries. He runs away fearful of a town that has such
intelligent people.

I'd like to use the dolls for class visits and found the above story a
little too complex for the lower grades. Does anyone have a favorite story
for nesting dolls?

Thanks you.

Thank you to everyone who answered my stumper about some children that were
pulled through a stereoscope. The answer is: " The Astonishing
Stereoscope" by Jane Langton. The other two books are "The Diamond in the
Window" and "The Swing in the Summerhouse".
