Subject: title suggestions

A mother of an 8 year old boy is wanting recommendations of titles for
her son - he has read the Hardy Boys, Magic Tree House Series, Encyl.
Brown, Einstein Anderson and assorted individual titles out of series.
She is interested in other titles (F and NF) for him to enjoy. She does
not want books that have "boy-girl" issues or similar "older" themes,
nor does she want anything that is scary, violent about death or
generally "dysfunctional". He likes humor, sports and adventure type
books. . I suggested Hank the Cowdog and some of Cleary's books. Is
there any series or individual titles or authors that come to your
minds? I should add she has tried some of Matt Christopher's books and
was not pleased - the book he read had a scence containing alcohol in
it. I'd welcome your suggestions. Send directly to me. If there is
interest, I'll post. THANKS!

Subject: Stumper Answered

The answer to my query about the boy who always did what his
mother told him, no matter how silly is in several versions. The old
one is "Epaminondas". The newer versions are called "Lazy Jack". One
is by Vivian French, another by Tony Ross, and a third variation is by
Mitchell Motomora.
Special thanks to Jennifer Wagner, Danita Nichols, Julie
Linneman, Nancy Gifford, Jen Vanston, and Virginia Cooper. My patron
will be amazed that I got the answer so quickly. Thanks everyone!

books or web/other resources.? Please e-mail me directly at
mdyer@icon-stl.net. Thanks so much for your help!

how recycling is done. I can find books on why to recycle=20
and what products result from recycling, but nothing for elementary=20
or even middle schoolers on the process of recycling. =20

I usually get one or two handwriting questions (teach their kids to =
write
neatly) a year. I refer them to teacher supply stores, but I remember =
an
OLD picture book (mice ice skating) that was semi-amusing

I am also looking for books that tell how to play specific sports, i.e.
basketball, football, skating etc. that are NOT about teams or players.
These sport books should be on a 5th or 6th grade reading level. Thanks

Children's Jukebox : A subject guide to musical recordings. . .lists several
songs about garbage that are available on cassette tape under the heading
"Ecology", pp. 78 - 81, including "Garbage" by Rosenshontz on "Share It",
"Garbage Blues" by Tickle Tune Typhoon on "Hug the Earth", and "Good Garbage" by
Tom Chapin on "Mother Earth". There are several songs dealing with recycling,
too!

Subject: J/YA Books for Adults

Hello all-
A teacher at a local school for special need adults has asked our children's
department if we could possibly do storytimes for them. She has told me that
they have, generally, a comprehension level of 7th grade. She would like
something that deals with overcoming obstacles or adversity or possibly just
uplifting. She said something like Chicken Soup without the religion... Does
anyone have any ideas? Does anyone do any outreach to the special needs
schools in your areas and can you share your experiences with it? No one here
is specifically schooled in special ed.
Thanks in advance,

I would just like to say that it grates on my nerves to hear the term
"non-professional". I think paraprofessional is a much better term, regardless
of how one feels about the subject.
