Subject: pirate songs or stories

We are doing a family night on Pirates during the first week of
November. I was wondering if anyone had any favorite picture books or
songs or activities around the theme of pirates. I have the fingerplay
posting from this summer. The family night has children from ages 2 to
8 years old.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Stumper solved - morbid ABC book

Hello -
I want to thank everyone who replied to my request. I received quite a
few responses. The most likely author is Edward Gorey although Chris Van
Allsburg was mentioned several times as well. I have forwarded all the
suggested titles to the customer who is reserving them from the other
branches. So, I don't know exactly which one is the right one but I
have a feeling that the Edward Gorey story is the one she is
remembering. Below is a list of the responses I received for those of
you who are interested. Again, a big thank you to all who responded and
helped with this stumper.

Does anyone recall seeing a fairly recent picture book illustrated with
photographs of Wrigley Field? One of our administrators swears she saw
it in our collection, but we're stumped. TIA

NEW MEXICO ROADRUNNER READING CLUB
(Statewide Reading Program)
Sponsored by the New Mexico State Library

The 2000 Roadrunner Reading Club (Statewide Reading Program) is requesting
proposals for at least two professional cultural performers to tour to about
50 library sites within the state of New Mexico during June and July of
2000.

The Roadrunner Reading Club offers every public, military, and Native
American library that wishes to receive it, a motivational reading program
with activities and incentives for the children of their communities. The
program is also being offered by some school libraries, and bookmobiles,
Books by Mail, and the Talking Book Library.

Each site agreeing to hold the program also has the opportunity to request a
cultural performance. The performance must relate to this year's theme: "
Read 'Round the World / Leer con todo el mundo." Possible thematic
approaches could include folk tales, friends in other cultures and places.
Storytellers and other performers are encouraged to contact Patricia
Froehlich, Youth Services Director at the New Mexico State Library
(505)476-9723, 1-800-3403890 or patricia@stlib.state.nm.us for further
information.

The performer(s) will be responsible for the following:

Develop a cultural performance that is entertaining and appealing to
audiences ranging in size from 10 to 1,000 people and ranging in ages from
pre-school to adult. Length of performance should be from 45 minutes to one
hour long, should involve audience participation, encourage reading, and
relate to the stated theme.

Plan and schedule performances directly with each site. The Youth Services
Director will assist as needed.

Prepare and mail a publicity packet to each site not less than one month
prior to the scheduled date of the performance. Contact each site not less
than 1 week prior to performance to re-confirm time and location.

Agree to attend two (2) workshop sessions for participating public
librarians. The first workshop (southern New Mexico) will be held at
Branigan Public Library, Las Cruces on Wednesday, January 19, 2000. The
second session will be held at the South Broadway Branch Library in
Albuquerque on Friday, January 21, 2000. No performance fees or other
compensation will be paid for attendance at the preparatory workshop
sessions.

Compensation shall be a $250.00 flat fee, per library performance. This fee
is inclusive for performance, mileage, and other expenses. Of the $250.00,
$175.00 per performance shall be paid through a state contract, upon
completion of performances. The remaining $75.00 per performance shall be
paid by each site at the time of the performance.

The New Mexico Roadrunner Reading Club does not contract with vendors who
discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion,
age, or disability in employment or the provisions of services.

Proposal should contain the following:
A. Your name, mailing address, and phone number, fax, or e-mail.
B. Description of your performance or program and how it will be
related to the "Read 'Round the World / Leer con todo el mundo" theme.
C. The names, addresses, and phone numbers of two references from sites
where you have performed within the past year.
D. A schedule of performance dates and places between now and November
15, 1999 where the youth services director and/or committee could see you
work, or a video tape of a typical performance.
E. Any additional support materials.

The original and one copy of the written proposal must be received by the
contact person no later than December 1, 1999, at 5:00 p.m. Proposals must
be in a sealed envelope marked CULTURAL PERFORMANCE PROPOSAL FOR 2000
ROADRUNNER READING CLUB. Any proposal received after the deadline shall not
be considered. The contents of any proposal shall not be disclosed to any
competing offerers during any negotiations that may occur. Proposals will
not be returned. Video tapes and support materials may be returned upon
request
