What a great group of people we have here! The answer to the stumper about
a mysterious disappearing cat is...The Doll in the Garden: a ghost story by
Mary Downing Hahn. Thanks to Pat Vasilik, Jennifer Ralston, Georgi
Sandgren, and Debbie Martin for this answer, it is indeed the book she was
thinking of (unfortunately my copy is checked-out/lost--so we're having it
sent from another branch.)
Other suggestions included Ghost Dog (in case of confusion on the patron's
part) by Ellen Leroe sent by Latricia Batchelor. The Courtyard Cat by C.S.
