Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for
ideas for our upcoming party! One idea that we came
up with that I wanted to share was making a
gingerbread Hogwart's Castle for the children to
decorate during the party. We are planning to keep it
as a display in the library during the holiday season.

We've done a number of kits, and they are popular with daycares and the
general public. They are a wonderful service, and it is helpful to the
staff to have an inventory on hand of a popular theme.
We showed a kindness to our circulation staff that has rewarded us several
times over. Instead of barcoding each item, we put the barcodes on
index
cards and placed the cards on a key ring for easy scanning. The
librarians are responsible for verifying the contents of the kits, and we
check them in.
We include an inventory list in each kit so that the teacher
and children can count the pieces together when they are getting ready to
return the kit. We work off the same list to verify the contents.
If
everything is there, we check in all the cards. If something is
outstanding, damaged or incomplete, we contact the patron, remove the card
from the batch, and note it on the inventory list. We've
only had a problem once this year, and the kits have circulated over 125
times. There are at least 10-30 items in each kit, and so this modest
collection (20 kits) contributes a fair number to our statistics.
Best of luck on your project.

Greetings everyone,
We will be launching a good-sized DVD collection in January for both
children's and adult collections.
Other than Amazon, does anyone have any other favorite sources to go to for
DVD's, even just to find out if a movie is available in that format?
It's been a little difficult finding reliable sources for information. I'd
appreciate any input.
Also, at this special time of year, I really want to thank you all for being
a big part of why our smallest patrons (and their parents) love us and our
staff is happy. Special blessings go to the wizards who put this all
together for us.

We have the following sign posted. It has cut down on our babysitting duties
and has given us a dialog to approach parents who leave preschoolers
unattended.
The sign reads, "Parents please do not leave children unattended. It is
a
violation of the Port Angeles Municipal Code 9.38.010." Generally we
try to
let kids, that are in 1st grade, play in the department while their parents
look for their books. It depends on the child. As with everything sometimes
it works sometimes it doesn't.

I am working on a research paper and would greatly appreciate your input.
I
am seeking to explore how some public libraries are shelving "Little
Black
Sambo", in hopes of better understanding the history of the book,
censorship, and controversial children's literature.
Please take a moment to answer the following questions:
1. Where is "Little Black Sambo" shelved at your library? And
please briefly
explain why.
2. Does your library own a circulating copy of "Little Black
Sambo"?
3. How would you describe your community: Urban, suburban, or rural?
4. If you have chosen not to own "Little Black Sambo" in your
collection,
please briefly explain why.
5. What is the population of your city or township?
6. What is the size of your children's literature collection?
Feel free to respond off list.
Thanks,

Please excuse cross-posting.
The Children's Services and Teen Services Divisions of Michigan Library
Association are working diligently on our joint annual conference, Spring
Institute. This conference is held every April in Michigan, and is
designed exclusively for people in libraries who work with children and
young adults. Please note that specific program information is subject to
change.
Flyers describing SI in detail--including registration rates, hotel rates,
and an outline of events--will be forthcoming to all CSD, TSD, and MLA
institutional members in late January/early February. You may also
check
the MLA website at that time to register on-line:
http://www.mla.lib.mi.us/
SI will be held April 17-19, 2002, at the McCamly Plaza Hotel in Battle
Creek. Our theme this year is "Read Rock Unlock!" Keynote
speakers
include storytime expert Judy Freeman, Jennifer Hubert (creator of
the Reading Rants! website and former Michigander), Johnathan Rand (author
of the Michigan Chillers series), and Caldecott winners David Small and
Sarah Stewart. The winners of the CSD Mitten Award for best children's
book and the TSD Thumbs Up Award for best teen book will speak and sign
books. The CSD Award of Merit and the TSD Fran Pletz Award for
outstanding children's and teen librarians of the year will also be
announced.
Breakout sessions will feature topics such as serving diverse youth;
genealogy for youth; developing CD collections; teen programs; creating
storytelling groups; storytime 101; Gale Group training on AccessMichigan
databases; two panels featuring Michigan authors; science programs; grant
writing; and comics/graphic novels.
On behalf of CSD and TSD, Nichole and I would like to thank our committee
of children's and teen librarians from across the peninsulas for donating

Each library (9) in our system has its own holiday party, usually a
potluck at the branch during closed hours. Sometimes it's in the
morning,
sometimes on a Friday evening. Staff vote on their preferred time.
We
attend on our own time. Meetings during the month (i.e., the
Children's
Services meeting, with all the children's librarians) will often include
some kind of festivities, but we pay for it ourselves.

Greetings!
Our library will hopefully be launching a mother goose program in the new
year. We currently have 3 or 4 books which deal with implementing this
type
of program, but I would like some first hand advice. My big concern is
ages- are newborns up to the age of three too broad? As
well, we will be
looking for toys, mats, and other equipment to properly serve this group- is
there a company that deals with this sort of thing? I've checked
Brodart
and Gaylord, but I am not finding exactly what I want. Lastly, what
happens
if you can't carry a tune- should I take voice lessons- (half joking)!
Any
advice is welcome!
Thanks so much!

Just a thought on this, but does it have to be a BOOK club, can it be a
READING club? Can they read short stories, magazine articles, =
interviews,
etc? I am not an expert, and yes I was shocked that a teacher would go
=
with
teaching that in the third grade (brave!), but maybe magazines like
Seventeen, YM, Self, would have articles that would help these girls.
=
That
kind of reading counts too, doesn=92t it? Or, they could read excerpts
=
from
autobiographies, not the whole thing.

Subject: Books for 3rd grade girls
Date: Fri, 7 Dec 2001 10:13:43 CST
Hello, all & help!
Yesterday a teacher from a local school told me she wanted to have a
book club for her 3rd grade girls, begining after the holidays. She
=
wants
to deal with issues they are bringing to her: (are you ready?) sex, =
drugs,
pregnancy. From what she was saying, these girls are interested
in =
things
way above their maturity level. She=92s looking for fiction that
=
would
address these things. I don=92t know about her particular class, but =
the test
scores from that school have the kids reading way below their grade =
level.
I=92m really stymied on this. I thought perhaps if she addressed
the =
subject
of self-esteem she might be able to help these kids. However,
looking
through =93Best Books for Children=94 I didn=92t come up with anything
=
that would
fit. Does anyone have any ideas? Is the teacher trying to
handle a
problem that would best be left to a social worker or guidance =
counselor?
Am I adding a problem to the equation by pursuing the self-esteem =
thing?
Any and all suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks!

During this difficult time, librarians must continue to be at the =
forefront of efforts to preserve and promote access to information and =
free expression, not an easy task anywhere, any time.=20
In this light, we need your help today.=20
On March 20, 2001, the American Library Association (ALA) filed suit to =
challenge the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). This Act requires =
public libraries that receive federal funding to install and enforce the =
use of blocking software on all computers with Internet access.=20
ALA filed suit, not only because of the flawed nature of filtering =
software, but also because CIPA violates the First Amendment and hinders =
the ability of libraries to fulfill their responsibility to provide access =
to information.=20
A trial date has been set for March 25, 2002. For the most current =
information on the legal challenge, please visit http://www.ala.org/cipa=20=
In order to meet funding needs for this legal challenge, ALA launched its =
campaign to raise $1.3 million for the CIPA Legal Fund. Thanks to many ALA =
member libraries, divisions, chapters, affiliates, and others, we are =
nearly halfway to our fund-raising goal.=20
Please visit http://www.ala.org/cipa/cipalegalfund.html
to make your gift =
to the CIPA Legal Fund and join ALA in our fight to protect intellectual =
freedom and equity of access. Please consider a contribution that will =
express your personal commitment to keeping Americas libraries safe from =
censorship.=20
By defending intellectual freedom, even during times of uncertainty, =
librarians help to ensure that intellectual freedom will remain one of our =
most treasured freedoms.

Hi,
I was wondering if any of you have done a Fashion Emergency program
for teens at your library. If you have, could you please tell me how
it went, what your plans were, did you have snacks, total cost..ect.?
I would really appreciate it!

We used to have a staff holiday party, but, several years ago, decided
that there was far too much going on in the month of December to add a
staff party to the mix.
Instead, we have a yearly staff party at the end of National Library
Week. It's a much better time of year to have a staff party - we don't
have to schedule yet another social obligation during the busiest time
of year - and it actually means something as a library staff to have the
party for Library Week.

I appreciated very much the compilation of comments re: Graphic Novels.
My
library only has a handful of them. I would like to start a shelf (20
- 30)
after the first of the year and would like to have your expert opinion of
'must haves.' Maus and Maus II? I would like a mix of literary
and
high-interest. Please indicate whether they are a definite YA or not.
Thanks!
