I'd like to find out what public libraries are doing as far as staff =
training for working with YAs.
If you know of some good programs or ideas that deal with training =
library staff to work well with teens, I'd love to know about it.

Hi Everyone-

I am doing a "dinosaur" storytime for 3-5 year olds.   I was wondering if
anyone has any unique craft ideas they like to share.

Thanks,

The library customer read a series of books in the late 1960s-early 70s
about a family called Melendy (sp.?)  who move from the city to country.
They have the Saturday Afternoon Adventure Club (SAAC) where they pool
their allowances and take turns going on adventures on Saturday.  Does
this sound familiar to anyone?  Please reply directly to me at the below

Dear Pubyacers,

I know this was discussed a while back but...

Our library's policy for children to receive library cards is that they must
be in First Grade.  However we have had a few children come in who have
flunked kindergarten and cannot get a card.  My Director wanted to know what
is the age or grade requirements you have for your library.  Personally I
would like to change this to an age, even though that too will cause some
unhappy people, hopefully fewer.  Please e-mail me direct at:

ablake@kcpl.lib.in.us

Anyone interested in the results can contact me and I will be glad to pass
on
the information.  Thank you in advance.

Hello!

I know this has been covered before, and for that I apologize, but I am
looking for a few more samples of Unattended Children Policies. I've found
some on the Internet and have the book _Unattended Children in the Public
Library: a Resource Guide_ published by ALA.

I'm specifically looking for policies that include unattended children at
closing and when to call the police.

Thank you.

I have a patron who wants books to help her 6 year old son "understand
why he has been given diabetes".  I have plenty of JNF materials on
diabetes, health, etc but she wants books and videos on "why him".  She
said she really doesn't want things on "self esteem", but rather things
to help him understand his situation, "preferably from a Christian
perspective".  I can use all suggestions.  I have gone to the National
Diabetes Children's website and others and checked out their
bibliotheraphy items, but none really seems to fit the bill.  Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated and I'll be happy to post.

The Wells County (Indiana) Public Library hosted two Mock Caldecott
workshops.  There were 25 people in attendance at the Thursday workshop.
Their choice for the Caldecott was "Martin's Big Words" written by Doreen
Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier.  They chose 4 honor
books--"And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon" by Janet Stevens and Susan
Stevens Crummel, "Three Pigs" by David Wiesner, "Midnight Ride of Paul
Revere" illustrated by Christopher Bing and "Crossing" written by Philip
Booth and illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline.

On Friday, 28 people attended and also chose "Martin's Big Words" as their
winner.  They named 2 honor books--"Crossing" and "One Monday" written and
illustrated by Amy Huntington.

We did a fairly successful single event promotion with our local drive-in =
movie theater this past fall.  Each person had to show their Library card =
to get a discount on admittance.  The Drive-in is interested in trying it =

attempted to increase youth patronage by linking
library cards with discounts at local businesses and

Hello all,

I was wondering how other libraries shelve their board
books for young children.  Ours are in rather ratty
plastic stacking bins (just tossed in) that are at
least somewhat organized by call number (A-G; H-L,
etc).  But the bins are in bad condition - I'm not
satisfied with way they look and I don't like that the
books on the bottom bins are not very visible.  I need
to replace them, and I'm exploring my options.  Are
those of you who keep them on shelves satisfied with
that arrangement, or do they just slide all over the
place?  Do any of you use nicer containers, and if so,
what?

Thanks in advance,

Dear Friends:
I have a patron looking for a children's book possibly from the 70's. It
is about townspeople who have built a giant peanut butter and jelly
sandwich to catch flies that have invaded their town.

I have checked A to Zoo and Best Books for Children to no avail. I
appreciate your help!

Incidentally, the same patron remembers a game of cards? that involved
making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich by trying to collect pieces of
bread, peanut butter and jelly.   She couldn't locate it on ebay, but
would like the name if you might remember. Thanks again for your help!

Could I ask your opinions on something?  What works out better for
children's services in a fairly large city system (serving over
140,000)
--equal sized branches or
--a main library and smaller branches?
--a few large branches and several small branches

We are at a juncture where we could push for expansion into any of these
kinds of systems and I would like to make sure I am considering what's
best for kids and children's services. Seems like whether or not you have
a children's coordinator in ANY of the systems would be important, but I
am wondering if one way is more likely to support a children's coordinator
and maintain strong support for children's services.

Thoughts? Experiences? Your comments will be invaluable!

How about a few musical instruments or listening to a CD where the kids can
stand up and jump around a bit. How about an opening song and a closing
song, a rhymie one of course.  Don't worry things will fall into place.
Perhaps some feedback from the parents would be good.  They can tell you
better than anyone what is missing, if anything.  A survey after the program
could be given them as well.

Good luck.  Let me know how it goes.  We are going to start an infant
program here as well.

Subject: something missing in Lapsit program

for those working with babies ages 0-24months:

Our lapsit program began in October.  Once a month, 6x a year.

This is how we describe it:  "It will be a lovely, noisy time.  The
babies will listen to very short stories, play little games, and listen
to all of us sing nursery rhymes to them.  Afterwards, the adults can
visit and enjoy snacks while the little ones play together."

Gisela (the lady who does the program) can feel that something is
missing but can't figure out what.  She had done it 3x now and knows
that it needs something that will have the patrons thinking, "This is
great.  We will come back next month."

The babies do hand motions and sing songs, but Gisela thinks that maybe
the babies making music somehow is what she needs.  She has gone to
websites of other libraries to see what their programs are like, but
they all seem to be like what she already has.

Any ideas about what is missing?
