Hello all,
A patron has inquired about a folk/fairy tale from her youth. The basic
plot is that a good sister goes out walking, meets a grandmotherly type
(possibly helps her with something?) who is carrying a golden egg and ugly
eggs. The woman tells the girl not to take the golden egg. The
obedient
girl takes ugly eggs and "good things happen to her." Her greedy
sister is
jealous of her luck, sets off, takes the golden egg, and "bad things
happen" to the disobedient sister.
We consulted dozens of folktale collections and MacDonald's "The
Storyteller's Sourcebook." Although we showed the patron many descriptions
of similar tales, such as 'Tiwa and the Magic Eggs,' none of those sounded
right to our patron.
Any help is welcome. Please reply off-list to nnorth@snap@lib.ca.us
Thank you!
