Dear Wise Ones:
One of our staff members remembers seeing a book, possibly at last
spring's Scholastic Book Fair.  She didn't really read the book, just sort
of skimmed it, and as she remembers it.... A girl goes into the woods often
and reads to a bear (and maybe other animals).  For some reason she quits
going, and the bear begins reading to the other animals.  She swears we had
a poster hanging up showing the Bear in the woods with a stack of books.
I don't remember seeing the book or even the poster, but we have the
Scholastic book fair right before summer reading kicks off, and I suspect I
had other things on my mind.  Anyhow, we apparently didn't buy the book, and
she's going crazy trying to find out what the title was.  Does this sound
familiar to anyone?   (she has a child in elementary school, and it could be
a book her child brought home, rather than something from Scholastic, I just
know it's not a book that I'm personally aquainted with.)
Thanks in Advance,
Linda Ackerman

I'm doing a storytime with a camping theme next month. We are going to sit
around the "camp fire", tell stories, sing camp songs, and make a craft.
Has
anyone done anything like this?  Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I thought a review of  "Netiquette" procedures for posting Stumpers or
Bibliography requests was in order.  It's interesting that this has become
such a big part of PUBYAC.  I had not originally envisioned that it would
comprise about 20-35% of our traffic.  Because it is such a large portion of
our posts, the procedures below will make it easier for everyone.

1) It is professional courtesy to include in your posting the references
which you have already checked. That way librarians all over the world won't
be hauling out their A to Zoo for the same question. This is Standard
Operating Procedure in large libraries who write "call-back" questions.

2) The SUBJECT LINE must begin with "Bib Request" "Stumper" and continue
with a short description of the book. There's nothing worse than a generic
stumper subject heading. This will also enable people who have the capacity
to filter their e-mail to delete the stumper before it hits their e-mail
box.

3) I will not forward misplaced stumpers to the correct addressee. Replies
must be sent directly to the original poster. You don't see this aspect of
PUBYAC, but it takes an inordinate amount of time to keep track of all these
stumpers. In other words, if you send a stumper answer to PUBYAC, it will
not be delivered. Only the original poster and their patron know if the
answer to a stumper is correct, borne out by my continual observation of
multiple differing answers to a single stumper question.

4) Because of #3, it is VITAL that the original poster include in the body
of the text his or her return address. Many mailers strip out addresses from
the headers and people can't see them.  Please also identify the library
from which you are hailing.

5) Agree that no one has to answer a question they don't want to answer.

6) "Thank yous" are optional. If you are curious about an answer, contact
the original poster.

7) I will try to send stumpers out last each night. If the digests work
right, stumpers should therefore be at the end. This is somewhat out of my
control, however.

8) If your answer to a stumper bounces back from the original addressee, it
does not help to post the answer to PUBYAC. If your mail bounces from that
address, it also bounces PUBYAC's mail.

9) When responding to the list with the found answer, please include the
pertinent portion of your original stumper.

Thanks to Patricia and Michelle for responding to my stumper so quickly.
I'd asked about a series of books set in Ireland dealing with a
Protestant girl and a Catholic boy. They were not set in Dublin but in
Belfast and both agree that the author is Joan Lingard. They were a
series including the titles 12th Day of July, Across the Barricades,
Into Exile, A Proper Place and Hostage to Fortune. We unfortunately no
longer have them but I will pass the titles on to my customer.

A patron is looking for a very old rhyme:

            I am a little dolly

my name is solly polly

I used to be a clothespin

She would like to know how the rest of the rhyme went.  If anyone knows
please e-mail me.

A colleague of mine has been searching for a book that
was 'most likely' published approx. 20 years ago. It
is about a woman who goes into a shoe store and tries
on every pair of shoes, but is unsatisfied with each
pair. They are either not the right size, the wrong
color, etc. The shoemaker finally takes down the very
large shoe that is outside of the store (either on the
roof or on the sign) and has her try it on, and that
is the one she ends up with.

This could be a Golden Book, but we are not sure.

We have checked the following resources:
A to Zoo
NoveList
Amazon.com
Google
EBay

You can reply to me at jenjosephine@yahoo.com
and thanks for the help!

Dear Fellow Pubyaccers,

I am thinking of doing a "Mystery Club" for ages 8 and up on a bi-weekly
basis during our summer reading program. Has anybody ever done anything
similar?

I am looking for book suggestions, program suggestions and craft
suggestions.

Reply to me off-line (aclas@nioga.org), and I will post a compilation of
everything received.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Anne.
