We didn't require permission slips when doing our mehndi program last
summer,
but we did make sure that it was well advertised so parents knew what was
up.  Most of them loved their children's body art.  I heard no complaints
and many compliments.

Our children's librarian is looking for advice on how to approach a
child (and his parent) who has plagiarized a poem in a poetry contest
that the library recently held. The judge felt the poem was too good for
a child that age and research proved that she was right, it had been
copied in part from a published poem.  Any suggestions?

Thanks so much for the suggestions to our stumper, which was
A patron here is looking for a book she read in junior high (late
70s) about a civilization who lives underground (and they are all bald!) A
boy finds a tunnel to the world above and meets a girl.

We've had two suggestions. One is Journey Outside by Mary Q. Steele, and the
other (which has been suggested more, though it wasn't published until 1985)
is Devil on my Back by Monica Hughes. We're waiting to hear from the patron
recognizes one of these; we have copies of both in our system so they'll be
able to read it soon.

I didn't say the discussion was not valid, I said the response was
inappropriate.  If this person wanted to start a legitamate discussion,
there are other ways to do it besides attacking a fellow list member.

Maybe I am just to used to message boards, one of which I moderate.  There
we tell people if they are going to get off-topic or insult others, they
need to do it with private messages, not on the main board for all to read,
and if they are having a serious problem with what other people are posting
they need to send a message to the moderator.

Common netiquette, like I said.

>The only problem with responding privately is that if there *is* a
>perceived problem, bringing it out in the open allows discussion.  We  know
>that some people feel that some questions should not be answered unless the
>student (and we were talking about a student, let's not forget) has shown

Hello All,

I need a little help.  A friend of the family has just become a guardian for
a 4 year old child who has behavioral problems related to fetal alcohol
syndrome.  She has asked me to find some books to read to him on the
subject.  I'm not commenting on wether or not this is a good idea, I'm just
trying to find her some books.  After much searching, in our catalog, all
the local library catalogs, amazon, A to Zoo, Children's catalog, I finally
resorted to the web at large.  I found two possibles:

My Name is Amanda and I have FAE from the FAS/E Support Network

and

Tad and Me: How I Found Out About FAS by Betsy Houlton

I couldn't find much about these books but they seem to be for smaller
children. They are only available for purchase through the support
organizations.  Does anyone know of some other books my friend might be able
to use that would be easier to get for her, or even a different source to
search?  In the mean time I will send her a list of books for kids about
controlling their behavior in general.

I know this is a long shot, but I thought I would try.

Thanks for your help

Hello everyone!

First, I'd like to thank all of you who had suggestions for how to find a
hip-hop instructor for our August activity program.  Many of you suggested
that I try a local dance studio, and I would have done that, except at the
last minute someone here on our staff actually knew a professional dancer
who has agreed to run the program for us.  I guess there are connections
everywhere!

Secondly, this request came in at one of our branches, and none of us here,
both young and old, have been able to identify the book.  This is the quote
from the patron:

"I'm looking for the title and author of a book that my parents used to
borrow from the New York Public Library when I was a child growing up in
Manhattan in the 1960s.  It was a children's book, the illustration style I
remember being similar to Maurice Sendak's.  Some people suggested it may be
by one of the Pene DuBois family?  The story was about a young boy who lived
(by himself?) in an automated house that did everything for him.  Dressed
him, fed him, etc.  One night the house is struck by lightning and goes
amok.  He is forced to learn how to do things for himself.  Great story,
good values.  But I can't find it anywhere."

Does this ring a bell with anyone?  Please respond to me at the address
below.  Thanks!

Liz McKay

Melissa and all,

We have scheduled a teen program for the evening of June 20.  At 10:30, a
local magician/storyteller will present a special magic program.  At 11:30,
we'll eat pizza, and at midnight, we will be listening to the first chapter
(or so) of the new HP.  This is the first time we've offered a late night
program for teens, so we aren't quite sure what to do with the parents (many
of them HP fans in their own right) who will need to transport kids to and
from the library (we usually don't admit parents to teen programs).  We will
probably provide them with snacks and a comfortable place to sit and read in
the new books area of the library until midnight, and then invite them in to
listen to the book.

Cheers,
Betsy

No, we'll be up at midnight here also.  We plan to show the second video,
do some games and door prizes and then let the kids check out some of our
copies of Harry Potter V after midnight (by lottery if need be).

Perhaps you can aid me. I do a 6 week long
non-traditional storytime for 13-35 months. I use many
action rhymes and I try to find fun games for the
toddlers to play. Thing is, I'm running out of games.

I have exhausted the internet. Used as many Mailbox
books as I could find and read any book that seemed
even remotely close to the topic.

Do you know of any other place I could look? Any and
all help is greatly appreciated

Greetings,

I am having my first Harry Potter Party to coincide with the 5th book, and I
have a lot of great ideas that I have saved from Pubyac over the past few
years.

One activity I would like to do is Harry Potter Bingo.  As I am not the best
graphic designer, I have spent the better part of the day searching for
Bingo boards on the Internet, but I have not found any.

Do any of you know of a resource that has either:

1. Harry Potter Bingo Boards or

2. A way you can customize your own Bingo board (similar to the way you can
create a word search on puzzlemaker)

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hi -
Can anyone tell me more about the Dragon Ball series?  A patron has
asked about them and she said "her whole class" was reading them.  That
might be a far stretch but are they worth buying?  I looked on BWI and
found no reviews attached to their records.  If they are garbage- I
would rather spend my money elsewhere but if they are popular- of course
I should buy them.  Thanks!!
