Hiya, all,

We are working with the local bookstore.  We have a teen acting
club/troupe who is putting together a short play summarizing the previous
books at
the books store at 11PM on debut night.  The play is going to be about 45-50
minutes.  The books will become available at midnight.

As a former Nassau County resident, I can confirm that there are residency
requirements for public librarianship.  There is also an "exam" which is
briefly a very long and involved application.  If I remember correctly,
there was also a fee involved.

As a current Suffolk County resident, to become a Librarian 1 (with a MLS)
you take an actual exam.  This is offered, on average, every 2 years (the
exam was just given in Dec. 2002).  To become promoted to Librarian 2, etc.
you will complete an application.  In order to become a Librarian 2, etc.
you must fulfill certain requirements.  There aren't residency requirements
for Suffolk County, in fact, I was a Nassau County resident working in
Suffolk County.

"Appeared" seems to be the key word here. We may never know her intention
because we never asked.
I love to listen to talk shows , but I'm always irked when the host goes off
on a tangent replying to what he thinks the caller is saying. As a third
party listener you want to tell them to clarify the question because what
they are answering is not what the caller is asking.

PUBYAC is NOT an e-mail reference service, but rather a forum for
professionals to share ideas.

Even within our member ranks--as with Stumper queries--we expect people
to exhaust the resources at their disposal, inform us of which sources
they've tried, and ask the list members to fill in the holes. The
student's transgression came when she appeared to use PUBYAC as a
jumping-off point instead of going to her school- and/or public library
and looking over the resources. "Book Talks" and "Book Talks United
States" are Library of Congress subject headings. I turned up 14
different titles in my library system using just those terms. Any and
all of these sources would tell her the basics of "how to do a
booktalk," as she asked in her query. Then she could have turned to the
PUBYAC members for their personal favorite tricks of the trade.

And the membership would be happy to share.

Respectfully,
Kathleen

As of June 1, 2003, ninety-two books have been nominated for Best Books
for Young Adults. Books will be discussed at the ALA Annual Meeting in
Toronto this June.
New nominations are posted on the first of each month throughout the
year.
Nominations from the field are encouraged. Please visit the YALSA Best
Books website for details, including the policies and procedures. Books
must be published between Sept. 1, 2002 and Dec. 31, 2003 to be eligible
for this year's BBYA, although field nominations may only come from
titles published in
2003.
If you or your teens would like to comment about any of the nominated
titles, please send your
comments to one of us and they will be shared with the BBYA committee.
