Folks:
First, thanks for everyone's Lemony Snicketesque titles. I printed out all
of the emails and had some other folks compare the suggestions to our
catalog. That's why this is only a sort of compilation -- if you made a
suggestion and you don't see it on this list, it's because I deleted those
emails before really thinking through the consequences (it just feels so
good to hit that delete button some days, though, doesn't it?). I've
included the list in the body of the message rather than attach it because
so many people (my systems administrator among them) aren't keen on opening
attachments in your email. Here's the end result (apologies for any
bizarre formatting):

Thanks to those of you who responded to my question asking for 5 or more
interesting ideas that worked for you this year. Here is a cut/paste
summary of the submisisons. Thanks to all of you for your creative
ideas.
Laura Gruninger
Our library system has compiled a database of successful programs that
have been used by our own member libraries. Some are programs run by
library staff, some include hired performers. Try going to
www.midhudson.org Choose
"departments", then "youth services", and
scroll down to the bottom of the page. It's called the EZ Library
Program Database. Happy hunting.

This is a great idea! It could be a automatic update to the website list
in Carole Fiore's book about various state's SRP manuals.
Our biggies this summer included:
Local art group placed a piece of public art on our lawn, and during the
dedication we had kids design postcards showing what Walla Walla means
to them.
Wanapum Way exhibit on tour from another county, in park and visited by
all parks and recreation programs.
Music program led by yours truly, with a guest trumpeter and his
collection of horns.
On the Oregon Trail was supposed to be led by a Ranger from the local
Whitman Mission but he had a death in the family so we (staff) led it.
Super Snoopers Officer from Police dep't was supposed to come and do
fingerprints, etc. but they had a big bust and we did thumbprint pics
with inkpads.
Fold and Fly -- director of the local airport came and showed several
paper airplane designs and talked about aerodynamics in a non-boring
way.
Local luxury hotel lent a ballroom for ourgrand finale Harry Potter
birthday event; had soundtrack playing, I did a dramatic reading and
sang the Sorting Hat song; drew forehead scars with half-a-dozen cheap
makeup pencils from the local discount place, made paper plate owls,
chopstick wands (really cool w/ metallic t-sided ribbon), other stuff
from scholastic website. nothing messy; we couldn't take a chance on
messing up the ballroom.
We did have a grand finale storytime also with camping stories and a
picnic on the lawn around our sculpture (Matilde goes to Market). Three
Days on the River in a Red Canoe, Monk Camps Out, Stella and Roy go
Camping, etc.
We also had Portland OR children's entertainer Jory Aronson in thanks to
our Friends group.

Hi Laura,
What worked this summer:
-Vehicle Day (big town trucks in library lot for kids to climb on - huge
crowds, good PR for all involved)
-weekly "thank you" raffle for the parents (even tho' it was just a
small
gift, they were very pleased to be acknowledged).
-reading to adopt acres of the rainforest (very motivating)
-die-cut leaves strung in vines around the room (kids earned them for
each 2
1/2 hours read and put their names on them). It really looked like the
rainforest and increased overall excitement!
-during the school visits, I asked some trivia questions about the
rainforest and those who got it right, got a raffle ticket (a jump-start
on
the summer program; usually they earn tickets by reading for 2 1/2
hours).
Did this also when we had a humor theme and 2-3 kids per group could
come
up, share a joke/riddle and get a ticket. All ticket winners showed up
on
the first day of the program!

Here are a few that worked well for us...
Kite-making program (spring break)
Captain Underpants Party
Visit from members of the local teen orchestra (taught about orchestra,
played music, sing-along, brought along "special" instruments for kids
to
play)
Acting workshop (one of our librarians was an actor/theater director for
several years)

We had John "Doc" Morrissy from Oak Park, IL, come to do his
"Magic for
Muggles" workshop with our kids. It was a two-hour workshop for
7-year-olds and up, at which he taught the kids to do magic tricks (a la
Harry Potter). Each child went home with a bag of tricks. The
program
cost was $200.00, plus $2.50 for each child. We did charge each child
$2.00 when s/he registered, to pay for their bag of tricks. We had 115
children participate, far and away our best program attendance since I
began working here. We had to move to the Park District building, as
our meeting room wouldn't hold them all! Contact John at (708) 450-0554
or PO Box 3852, Oak Park, IL 60303.

Hi Laura~
Here at my branch (McCreless) of the San Antonio Public Library system,
we had great success with the magician (local guy, Chuck Golla);
musician (Austin, TX: Joe McDermott); Harry Potter games (I provided
some board games that I purchased at Toys R Us, had a Mirror of Erised
craft using freebie CDs, and let kids try to catch a golden snitch
one-handed while straddling a broom);
Delta Society dogs, and San Antonio Ferret Enthusiasts, both of which
brought dogs or ferrets to the library.

Hey Laura:
I had eight weeks of crafts! Every Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. This
year's
crafts went along with our SRP theme, Wild about Reading. We made rain
sticks, lion masks, etc. These were a *huge* success! (with about 40
kids
per week!) I find that in the summer, my craft programs really pick up!
There was also the old favorite, PJ stories. Since it stays light out so
much later in the summer, my numbers sky rocket for this program as
well!
Not very creative, but my shared thoughts on summer programming!

Laura,
A successful program we did at several locations was part of our
Destinations series--actually I'll outline 2 of them
Destination Australia--we presented information from Dropping In On
Australia and Vicki Cobb's This Place is Lonely (and other miscellaneous
information). Then, we went on an Australian walk-about--a large map of
Australia painted on a bed sheet. Kids "sang" and the Sidney
Opera
House,
snorkled at the Great Barrier Reef, drew hand prints at Uluru (Ayers
Rock)
sheared sheep (pretended with a puppet), skiied the Australian Alps, and
mined for gold. At the very end they donned rain gear on Tasmania and
we
squireted them in the face with water--it's very wet in Tasmania. The
kids walked through the "maze" of activities on the map, one at a
time,
and had great fun.
Destination: Antarctica--We presented various bits of information about
exploration and animals of Antarctica then went on a sailing
voyage--just
a very long rope held in shape of a ship with people inside, walking
through the children's area spotting the different kinds of
penguins--carrying boxes of supplies. Then we simulated Shackleton's
18-month experience stranded on ice. We divided the ship of people into
3
longboats (tape outlines on the floor), loaded each longboat with
supplies, then divided each longboat into rowers, watchers, sleepers and
went through a day of exercise, eating, and other activities to show how
difficult it would have been to be on the water for days and days.
Another big hit.
We are more and more convinced that the floor (and masking tape)
is one of our best props in making participatory stories. A little
script, a few boxes or other props, and a sense of fun show the kids
that
they can "play" a story or event thmselves.
Hope this helps. - jeri Jeri Kladder [jkladder@gcfn.org]
Hi Laura,
What a great idea...I will look forward to seeing the completed list!
Programs that went well this summer...
--Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt--open to families, as opposed to
individuals ; started up the day before the new book came out, and
finished up the day before his birthday celebration (all the entries
were put on display at the party, which was another great program)
--Classic Cafe: a celebration of stories and food from around the world
(ie. France--quiche) (grades 1-4)
--Cake decorating session done by a local supermarket (the baker
decorated 2 cakes and the kids got to eat them!); we also went on a tour
of the supermarket at another time
--Baseball Storytime featuring a player from a minor league team
(included me and the team's marketing assistant acting out WHO'S ON
FIRST.(also did a race car storytime featuring a race car driver AND his
car!) ALL AGES
--Kids in the Kitchen-weekly cooking class each week featuring a such
things as fruit layered yogurt parfait, 7-layer Mexican dip (grades 1-3)
--Our SRP gives kids the option of doing various activities to earn
prizes (reading is only one of the choices!); what was REALLY successful
was letting kids bring in a canned good item to donate to a local food
collection agency as one of the options to earn their prizes.
OTHER Successful programs over the past few months include a Nesting
Doll StoryTime, Drummin'- a storytime featuring books about drums and
real drummers playing along, and our Disney week-long celebration in
February.

Hi Laura,
One thing that is always popular in my system is a candy jar on the
Children's desk. Once a week kids may make a guess as to how many
candies are in the jar. If they guess correctly, they win the candy.
Each week we put in new candy, and this runs for the entire length of
the SRC. It's hugely popular and requires very little effort on our
part. It also really helps to boost SRC sign-ups, b/c when the kids
notice the candy, we tell them the jar is part of the SRC and wouldn't
they like to register? The answer is usually yes!
--susan Susan Dunn [sdunn@jefferson.lib.co.us]
We always do a recycle craft program. It's a good way to get rid of
odds and ends (paper towel tubes, packing material, yarn scraps, scratch
paper, spools, etc.), and it's great for a wide age range.
We set up tables with markers, crayons, glue, scissors. We have a few
other tables with recycle stuff, and let the kids help themselves. No
instruction - just let them be creative with the materials they choose.
Kids really enjoy it. Colleen Cunningham [ccunningham@nols.org]
