None of the 5 existing copies of Little Black Sambo that are in our
system are available to be checked out. They are housed as reference
copies in 3 branches and at our Children's Dept. headquarters.
But we do circulate 3 of 4 copies of Little Black Sambo : a closer look
: a history of Helen Bannerman's The story of Little Black Sambo and
its popularity/controversy in the United States / by Phyllis J. Yuill.
(New York : Racism and Sexism Resource Center for Educators, c1976.)
This contains the original story: Appendix A: The story of Little Black
Sambo, written by Helen Bannerman: p. 40-42.Prepared for the Council on
Interracial Books for Children.
We are a large suburban library system serving most of Cuyahoga County
in Ohio. We serve an increasingly diverse population.
I'd be upset if we simply "disappeared" a book with such historic
importance, but I think how we've handled it shows sensitivity both
toward those who object to the book on grounds of racism and those who
raise intellectual freedom issues.

A coworker brought in her favorite book from childhood.
Unfortunately it has no cover or title information. It is vintage
Dick and Jane type although the text is not a reader, but more like a
golden book (could it be?).
The story line is: Tommy and Mary Lou use a key which Tommy found in
the garden to get to fairyland through a rock. They shrink to the
size of fairies. Gruffy the Elf brings them to the Queen's party
where they have a delightful time with the fairyfolk and other little
creatures. They fall asleep and wake up in the garden being called
to dinner by their mother.
If anyone has any idea about the author or title, my coworker would
be overjoyed to know.

This is the information I recieved when I signed up at amazon.com to be
notified when the 5th book would be released.
Greetings Harry Potter Fan,
You have signed up for this Newsletter to be notified when the 5th Harry
Potter Book <A
HREF="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000059Z4H/lifechanging">"Harry
Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"</A> is released. Well, we
have good news!
Rumor has it that J.K. Rowling is in the final stages of the book. It is
believed that she wanted to wait and release the 5th book after a good
running of the 1st movie, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's
Stone"(in the US)
or "...Philosopher's Stone"(in the UK). This gives all the people
that
haven't gotten a chance to read the first four books, time to start before
the 5th will be released. We at <A

Harry Potter Books and

for a 1st quarter 2002 (January, February, or March) release. You can bet
that we will be camped out for the midnight opening at our local bookstore.
Did you know that we have a Games section on our site?
We have links to Quidditch games, Quizzes, Word Searches, Mazes, Official
Games, our own Potter-ation game and more...
Try out our games section here: <A

We also have a Message Board system where people from all around the world

pay a visit to your respective common room. Once you have done that you can
enter the Hogwart's Hall.
There you will meet our head mistress, Harrypotterlover (aka HPL). She
always
seems to be in and out of the many rooms. Make sure you take part in the

We have a patron looking for this story which sounds like a folktale
variant of some sort. He remembers reading it in the 1970's and remembers
it as a single tale, illustrated book. The style of illustration, as he
recalls it, was similar to Sendak's style. It's about a prince who is
traveling and meets three friends who each have a special talent. One can
turn into a beehive; one can turn into a snake and one (maybe?) a bear.
He's least certain about the bear. They use these talents to help him win
back his kingdom in a battle.
We have searched our brains, our library catalog, and our system catalog
using various keyword combinations to no avail. We also have checked
MacDonald's Storyteller's Sourcebook under stories that seem to have
related motifs like the Seven Chinese Brothers, The Valiant Rooster, and
the Fool of the World. No luck.
Does any one recognize this stumper?

We have the following sign posted. It has cut down on our babysitting duties
and has given us a dialog to approach parents who leave preschoolers
unattended.
The sign reads, "Parents please do not leave children unattended. It is
a
violation of the Port Angeles Municipal Code 9.38.010." Generally we
try to
let kids, that are in 1st grade, play in the department while their parents
look for their books. It depends on the child. As with everything sometimes
it works sometimes it doesn't.

Have any of you had any experience with a pet show or pet parade
type of program? Sounds like fun, but could be disasterous if dogs
chase cats and cats eat fish etc. Am working on submitting a
proposal, so need your input and advice ASAP directly to my

A patron who is a primary teacher was told about a poem that could be used
to discuss the idea of covering your mouth when coughing/sneezing. Another
teacher (now retired) had told her about it. She thought it was by Shel
Silverstein, who has written a couple of poems about sneezing, but not one
that seems to match this exact description. I have also eliminated a poem
by Maxine Kumin, and a few by Jack Prelutsky.
There is nothing else in the Wilson children's poetry indexes which we
have
covering collections up to 1987.
Does anyone out there in children's-services-land have an idea what this
might be?
Thanks for looking (and merry Christmas, etc to everyone on the list. A
few of us performed the recently-posted parody of 'God rest ye merry
gentlemen' at our staff party earlier this week).

I have a really doozy for you. I young lady contacted
me from Seattle about a book that she remembers her
father reading to her in the late 70's. she remembers a tall,
thin book with a black binding that contained a story about
a cat who wouldn't listen to his parents...he was bad. He
would do things like leave the bathroom sink water running
so it sounded like he was brushing his teeth. She remembers
loving the illustrations. :)
Does anyone have any ideas about this book? We've been
looking around in A-Zoo, on Worldcat, in the branch where
she remembers reading it, but nothing has come up so far.
If anyone has any info about this book we would REALLY
appreciate it.

Dear All,
Our library only allows adults to borrow videos. We are considering
letting children borrow our nonfiction and educational videos, but we
think we'd have a problem explaining why we can loan nonfiction videos
but not entertainment films.
I'd be interested to hear from public libraries that currently do not
limit any access to videos and how they handle patron complaints about
children being able to borrow R-rated movies.
I'd also be interested to hear from any public libraries that allow the
loan of nonfiction videos (like National Geographic) to minors but that
do not let children borrow entertainment films.
You may respond to me off list if you wish at hcowan@vineland.lib.nj.us

The closest I've come to having a pet parade was
during this past year's "Be Kind to Animals" week. I
invited a local 4-H Club (Canine Kids) in to do a
special presentation on their specialty. There were 6
dogs, and things stayed very well controlled. I'm not
sure how a mixed pet program would go. Good luck!

Dear all,
I have a patron looking for a picture book - he thinks it's recent - about
dogs in a dog pound. The dogs have names like "Barks a lot"
and "Too big".
There is a fire and the dogs might do something to save the pound? save
people? Then everyone realizes that these dogs should have families
too and
they find owners for them. The book might have a white cover.
If this sounds familiar, let me know.
Thanks for your help.

Hello! Happy holidays. If yours is already past, I hope it was
great.
Here, finally, is the list of links & titles that people were kind
enough to
send me about autobiographies. Thanks so much for that, and also to
Jeanne
Smith who mailed me her library's extensive list as well as Shannon
VanHemert, who sent me a great list via Excel, but I wasn't able to

THANKS
TO BJ QUINLAN FOR SENDING IT ON TO ME! :o) )
Some interesting books are:
Upon the Head of a Goat by Aranka Siegel
Homesick, My Own Story by Jean Fritz
The Moon and I by Betsy Byars
I recently had a young patron who needed to read an autobiography for an
assignment and her mom wasn't to keen on the usual sports figure type
autobiographies. The girl took the Jean Fritz book for her report and
was
very happy with it (mom was, too).
Bitton Jackson, Livia/ _I Have Lived a Thousand Years_ (a
Holocaust
survivor memoir)
Cheng, Long/ _I Am Jackie Chan_ (his true story--adult/YA)
Cleary, Beverly/ _A Girl from Yamhill_ (the children's author's
memoir)
Dahl, Roald/ _Boy_ (author's childhood memoir)
Fleischman, Sid/ _The Abracadabra Kid_ (author recounts his teen years
as a magician and becoming a writer)
Frank, Anne/ _The Diary of a Young Girl_
Hickam, Homer/ _Rocket Boys_ (AKA October Sky, story of rocket
scientist's early life, YA/Adult)
Kehret, Peg/ _Small Steps: the Year I Got(?) Polio_ (author's
story)
Keller, Helen/ _The Story of My Life_
Rock, The/ _The Rock Says_ (wrestler's story: adult/YA)
Spinelli, Jerry/ _Knots in My Yo-yo String_ (author's story)
Yen Ma, Adeline: _Chinese Cinderella_ (true story of unwanted
daughter in China)
and I just remembered: _ Red Scarf Girl_, but I can't recall the author.
I think perhaps Jean Fritz has also written an autobiography of growing up
in China? (THANKS DEIRDRE!)
At my last library, the kids liked Knots in My Yo-Yo String by Jerry
Spinelli. I also recommend A Girl From Yamhill by Beverly Cleary and,
for
older readers, the very wonderful Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio by
Peg
Kehret. (THANKS, CARLIE!)
I have had good luck with Sid Fleischman's "The
Abracadabra Kid", Peg Kehret's "Small Steps: The Year
I Got Polio", and no list would be complete without
Tomie De Paola's "26 FAirmont Ave" series (these are
really short, but maybe if they read two of them?)
Writers create great autobiographies! (THANKS SUSAN!)
Favorite autobiographies for kids:
Dahl, Roald. _Boy: Tales of Childhood_ (and the sequel: Going Solo)
Fritz, Jean. _Homesick: My Own Story_
Gilbreth, Frank B., Jr. _Cheaper by the Dozen_
Hautzig, Esther. _The Endless Steppe: Growing Up in Siberia_
Jiang, Ji-Li. _Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution_
Kehret, Peg. _Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio_
Keller, Helen. _The Story of My Life_
Peet, Bill. _Bill Peet: An Autobiography_ (THANKS, JULIE!)
...But when the assignment sheet actually says autobiography, one I like to
hand out is Bill
Peet: an autobiography. It's almost 200 pages long, but has very big
print
and
is fully illustrated with Peet's sketches -- and it's fun to read! (THANKS,
KELLY!)
These are some fairly recent titles that I've found to be very
popular:
Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio, Peg Kehret
Spellbinder: The Life of Harry Houdini, Tom Lalicki
Shipwrecked: The True Adventures of a Japanese Boy, Rhoda Blumberg
Dragon Bones and Dinosaur Eggs; A Photobiography of Explorer Roy
Chapman Andrews, Ann Bausum (only 64 pages, but a great book) THANKS,
JULIE!)
