Thanks to those who sent in ideas on topics for
parenting workshops. Unfortunately I did not get a
great number of responses, but enough to get me
thinking!

Some suggestions:

Internet safety and finding kid sites
>From a school librarian - homework help, bullying,
discipline
Family read-alouds, poetry sharing
Extension ideas for subjects kids cover in school -
animal habitats, map-making and reading, genealogy,
journal-making and diary keeping, literary excursions
or historic trips within a day's drive of the
community.

Working with your local public television station was
also suggested

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County
offers a number of valuable parent education
workshops. Try their website for some ideas:
http://www.cce.cornell.edu/suffolk/parented/Programs_01-02.htm

We have used them with great success in the past.

I welcome any more suggestions -

Georgi

Does anyone have a resource for book kits (for preschool to early readers)
which come with a CD instead of cassette? The catalogs I'm looking at
don't seem to carry them and the jobber we use (BWI) doesn't seem to have
them either. Thank you in advance!

I had a complaint/concern today about an Eyewitness book, on Mythology,
page 28 is a very graphic illustration of a cyclops eating a fresh
killed limb ( a deer?)  Parent was concerned about younger children
being upset over the graphic nature of the photograph ( in full bloody
colour)
Do you label any books with a caution sticker, such as "graphic
illustrations" ot something like that?
I know that mythology is brutal, but the picture is pretty over the top,
however I wont pull the book
Help!

Dear Elaine,
I've made pita pocket sandwiches, had the shape of a pocket that children
glued on sequins & other decorations; had a drawing of Corduroy which
children colored in and then glued on a pocket (made from wallpaper) and had
a picture of a kangaroo, facing front, and a baby kangaroo that they colored
and put in pouch.  Also folded a paper plate in half, punched holes 3/4 way
round which children then laced and decorated - a pocket to carry in case
their clothes didn't have pockets (Peter's pockets)  I probably have
patterns for Corduroy and kangaroo.  If you are interested, email back with
fax # and I'll look.

Hello Everyone-

I am looking for a craft or other activity for preschoolers on the topic
of "Pockets."  If you know of a game or craft that is simple (for me and
for ages 3-5!), please e-mail me at williael@oplin.lib.oh.us
I already have books, just need activities.
Thanks in advance!

I've followed with interest the replies to Sheilah's query about reading
books that go into our collections.  My colleagues and I are curious about
whether or not other librarians are allowed to read some of this material
while on the clock.

We, too, feel it is important to read the materials in our collections, but
I also enjoy reading adult materials (my hold for Shelters of Stone was
filled today-yippee!) and I find myself becoming resentful that there are
not enough non-library hours in my day to read all the books that come in,
and yet reader's advisory is a part of my job (an aspect which I love).

I wouldn't expect to use my work time to read all the materials that come
in, but we are curious how many of you work in a library where it is
accepted to spend some time each week reading materials at work-anyone?  If
you do spend some work time reading, what's your rough estimate of how much
time a week you spend doing so?

You can answer me directly, and I will post results if there is much of a
response.  Thanks in advance for assuaging our curiousity!
